Roxbury MassachusettsChildren’s Services of Roxbury Review

A non-profit organization, Children’s Services of Roxbury was established in 1968 in the Boston neighborhood of Roxbury, Massachusetts. The community-based agency was originally formed to extend the services of Boston’s Children’s Services Association to the growing number of African-American children in need of foster homes and adoption. It remains the largest organization in Greater Boston that is run by and for minority groups. The substance abuse program treats adults, offering outpatient, assessment and referral services.

Treatment and Staff

The substance abuse program was designed to fill a perceived gap in services at Children’s Services of Roxbury. Many parents that lost custody of their children had trouble finding recovery support, so the outpatient program was created to address this need. Clients are often referred through other services, though self-referral is possible.

Those seeking treatment must be over 18 and have at least five days free of alcohol and drugs at the time of intake. Appointments can be made, as clients will receive urinalysis and drug testing if substance use is suspected. Before being admitted to the program, clients must demonstrate a willingness to attend group and individual therapy, as well as ongoing assessment and urinalysis if required by the courts. Full compliance with treatment plans and legal stipulations is required. Use of drugs or alcohol will result in immediate termination from the program.

Prescription medications must be listed and verified as support for co-occurring disorders is provided. Those with an acute condition that outweighs their substance abuse are referred to other services, as are those in need of medical detox or inpatient care. Treatment plans vary in length and intensity. A case manager develops goals and a suggested schedule together with the client. In order to achieve effective results, Children’s Services of Roxbury helps clients that demonstrate a desire for recovery meet these with the help of structured guidelines.

Group therapy is offered on weekdays at several times throughout the day. Clients can choose the most suitable and attend up to three sessions a week. A licensed counselor facilitates groups and sets topics that include anger management, healthy communication, relapse prevention and avoiding triggering environments. Discussions follow, during which clients can experience and express peer support. Individual therapy occurs up to once a week and is facilitated by a LADC or LCSW.
