With several locations in Los Angeles, California, the Children’s Institute, Inc. is a community-oriented non-profit organization dedicated to helping families and children struggling with domestic violence, poverty and behavioral health issues. Founded in 1906, it has grown over the years to offer a wide range of individualized counseling services.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all clients go through an intake and assessment process to help staff members develop their treatment plans. Although on-site detox and stabilization services are not available, referrals can be made whenever necessary. Once accepted, individuals and families can begin attending outpatient mental health counseling. Treatment consists of individual and group therapy sessions with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT and DBT. Though each plan is flexible, treatment can span anywhere from only 12 to 16 sessions to 30 weeks.
Because the organization is so focused on helping families heal, treatment includes plenty of family therapy along with a variety of topics including family economics, parenting skills, communication, health and wellness, art therapy, life skills and additional related topics. Dual diagnosis support and trauma-informed care are both available as well. While 12-step participation is not always required, it may be in some cases.
The staff at Children’s Institute Inc consists of psychiatrists, psychologists, LCSWs, LMFTs, LMHCs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Many family-specific treatment options are available including child welfare services, early care and education programs, youth development services, domestic violence counseling, support for disadvantaged fathers and court-ordered treatment programs. Finally, those who complete a primary care regimen can also work with case managers to develop stepped down aftercare plans.
In all, Children’s Institute is a broad organization which offers many flexible and affordable treatment plans to low-income individuals and families. Treatment plans are all individualized and include evidence-based care, dual diagnosis support, family therapy and additional ancillary services. While those in need of more intensive psychiatric care may need to seek additional help elsewhere, Children’s Institute is a great option for community-oriented programs.
