Children’s Advocacy Center Review
Based out of Orlando, Florida, Children’s Advocacy Center is a subsidiary of the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. The organization provides a wide range of services such as assessments, advocacy and counseling to children and families suffering from abuse, trauma and related behavioral health issues. All treatment plans are individualized and facilitated on an outpatient basis.
Treatment and Staff
Before treatment begins, all clients go through an intake and assessment process to help the staff develop their care plans. Those in need of any kind of detox or stabilization services can do so through the Arnold Palmer Hospital before therapy begins. The counseling program at the facility is called The Healing Tree and provides treatment to children ages three through 17 years old.
Plans may differ somewhat though each includes individual, group and family therapy with evidence-based treatment practices like CBT and DBT, though these may vary by practitioner. Each program includes trauma-informed care approaches designed to help families work through dysfunction and problematic behavior in a safe and controlled environment. Groups cover parenting skills, emotional processing, life skills, family systems, healthy communication and anger management. Dual diagnosis support is available and 12-step participation may be encouraged as well.
The staff at Children’s Advocacy Center consists of psychiatrists, psychologists, RNs, LMHCs, LCSWs, LMFTs, LPCs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
Children’s Advocacy also offers training and support programs for law enforcement officials and other professionals to help them understand and recognize signs of child abuse. As mentioned, counseling and educational services are available to adults and family members with children in the program.
Other services include the medically-oriented Child Protection Team which offers medical assessments of children who are suspected victims of child abuse and a Child Advocacy Center which provides case management, assessments and legal aid. Those who finish a program can also work with staff to develop stepped down aftercare plans.
In Summary
Overall, the Children’s Advocacy Center is a well-rounded organization with a wide range of community-oriented services to children and families dealing with behavioral health issues and dysfunction. Treatment is evidence-based and includes counseling, legal aid and other ancillary services. Though it is somewhat of a niche option, the Children’s Advocacy Center remains a strong resource for those in the area.
