Child & Family Center Review
Situated about 30 miles north of Los Angeles in the city of Santa Clarita, California, Child & Family Center (CFC) is a nonprofit treatment facility that specializes in the care of children, adults and families struggling with mental illnesses, substance use disorders and traumatic life events. Founded in 1976, CFC offers a comprehensive approach to care that includes therapy, crisis intervention, psychiatric services and case management on an outpatient basis.
Treatment and Staff

Counselors utilize play therapy to simultaneously help younger children express painful trauma and for their parents to better understand developmental stages. Play therapy is videotaped and played back in front of the parent so that the therapist can point out behaviors and patterns.
Adolescents with emotional issues or substance use disorders receive an extensive treatment plan that includes substance use counseling, individual therapy and psychiatric services. Treatment of adults is typically short-term and focused on setting goals for recovery and independence. Assessments, psychotherapy and medication services are also available.
The Child & Family Center team is comprised of psychologists, LCSWs, MFTs, child psychiatrists, case managers, preschool teachers and a crisis team. Psychiatric evaluations are performed and medication management is provided when necessary. Since CFC primarily offers outpatient based therapy and medication management, 12-step recovery is not a component of the programming.
Extras
The CFC team also works in the community to provide crisis intervention, and offers educational opportunities including parenting classes for all age groups. These groups focus on child development and home management, and are typically offered two to three times a year for six weeks. The facility also provides a support group for teenagers transitioning into adulthood.
CFC also offers in-home mental health services for clients under the age of 25 along with their families. In-home programming includes crisis intervention and relationship-based individual and family therapy. In addition, counseling is also provided for individuals struggling with substance use and domestic violence.
Therapists from CFC are available at school sites for teacher and administrator consultations as well as counseling sessions. The school program was created to help students become more focused on learning. Therapists also offers help for children in abusive or neglectful situations, with the goal to strengthen the entire family unit.
When necessary, CFC provides transportation for individuals or families to and from counseling.
