Chestnut Health SystemsChestnut Health Systems Review

Chestnut Health Systems has been in operation in western Illinois for more than 40 years. It offers substance abuse counseling and treatment for adolescent and adult clients.  Options include inpatient, Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and outpatient programs providing 12-step-based care, dual diagnosis support as well as gender specific treatment out of facilities in Belleville, Bloomington, Edwardsville and Granite City, Illinois.

Accommodations and Food

Out of the four Chestnut Health Systems facilities the main outpatient one is located in Bellville, while residential treatment is found in Bloomington. The latter is set up with the inpatient wing found on the first floor and outpatient classes being provided throughout the day on the second floor.

Clients bunk two to a room at a maximum of 18 per unit, separated into a male and female unit, for a combined total of 36 clients. All three meals per day are included, with fruit and snacks available throughout the day. No caffeine or sugar are permitted. Clients must do their own laundry using washers and dryers provided in their unit, but their own soap.

Treatment and Staff

Chestnut Health Systems clients start with a two to three hour evaluation to determine the level of care necessary. From there, they typically enter the residential program for a standard month’s stay or IOP.  Residential treatment offers individual, group and family therapy throughout the day. The program is highly structured and individualized and clients get assigned their own counselor upon arrival. Clients must complete homework on a daily basis, as well as assigned chores. While they are transported to and from off-site AA/NA meetings, they must earn the right to leave the premises for recreational outings such as going to a nearby park or in town for bowling. During their stay, residents work on life skills such as stress management, coping styles and relapse prevention and get 24-hour clinical supervision.

The IOP starts at three days a week attendance and transitions to one or two days a week after a period of six to eight weeks. Both day and evening IOP groups are available for around two to three hours per day on weekdays and evenings. Step down into regular outpatient takes attendance down to one to eight hours per week.

CHS has clients under nursing supervision during the day but not 24/7. A medical doctor is available for physicals and medication management. The rest of the staff consists of psychiatrists, LADCs, recreation coordinators and case managers.

Extras

The residential facility features a large gym, as well as a basketball and volleyball courts.
