The Chesterfield Department of Mental Health Support Services provides treatment for mental health, intellectual disabilities and substance abuse to adolescents and adults living in Chesterfield County, Virginia. Separate outpatient substance abuse tracks are available for men, women and adolescents. Programs are non-intensive and include medication management for those who need support for co-occurring disorders.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Chesterfield is available for all those struggling with chemical dependency, mental health disorders and co-occurring disorders. The intake process begins with an assessment, after which clients are scheduled to see a primary therapist. Medication management services are provided by an on-site psychiatrist.

Each client receives an individualized treatment plan that includes group and individual therapy sessions held on a weekly basis. Groups take place Monday through Friday starting as early as 9 am and run until 7 pm. All adult groups are 90-minutes to two-hours long and are gender-specific. Women and men are served by gender-specific staff, though both programs discuss similar issues during group sessions. Staff utilize both CBT and DBT and discuss topics including the disease of addiction, living in balance, grief, Seeking Safety, relapse prevention and smoking cessation. Individual therapy sessions are typically scheduled once a week for an hour at a time.

Adolescent services also consist of non-intensive group therapy and individual sessions. Groups are held at similar times throughout the week and can be gender-specific depending the needs of each participant. There are currently only co-ed groups held for 90-minutes a time that focus on substance abuse education, stress management, relapse prevention and childhood trauma.

Staff members at Chesterfield include psychiatrists, LADCs, LCSWs and Master’s-level therapists trained in evidence-based modalities.

Extras

In addition to the groups mentioned above, Chesterfield also offers prevention and early intervention services for youth and families. There is also a list of parent education classes which focus on child development, coping and stress management, communication and behavior management. Along with education classes, there are workshops on substance abuse prevention and strategies for school success led by prevention services speakers. Staff members are also available for consultations at the request of teachers or parents. In these cases, each child’s behavior is observed in a class setting and a plan of action to correct negative patterns is developed.

The CAST program at Chesterfield encompasses all of the child and adolescent services in an individual, group or family setting. Support is available for mental health, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders through scheduled therapy sessions. Finally, couples can also attend classes designed to teach communication skills and tools to establish healthy relationships.

In Summary

Through the Chesterfield Department of Mental Health Support Services, adolescents and adults receive outpatient care to address a variety of behavioral health issues. Treatment is led by qualified professionals with experience in dealing with addiction and mental health disorders. While those requiring intensive care may need an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or residential care, this facility is ideal for those seeking a solid and flexible program.
