Charlie’s Place Recovery Center Review

Founded in 1965 as the Coastal Bend Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Center and renamed in honor of founder Charlie Acklen, Charlie’s Place Recovery Center offers both inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment in a residential facility located on several acres of land in Corpus Christi, Texas. A CARF-accredited facility, Charlie’s Place offers medical detox services and 12-step oriented recovery care.

Accommodations and Food

Set in a restored hotel, Charlie’s Place is a large scale operation providing housing for between 80 and 150 residents at a time. During detox, clients are housed in a separate wing of the facility, though accommodations are the same as those in the inpatient program. Residents can expect to have one roommate or a private room depending on space, all in hotel-style rooms that feature twin beds, basic furnishings and private bathrooms.

There is an on-staff chef and cooking team who provide three hot meals a day served cafeteria-style in the facility’s dining room. Additionally, clients can expect snacks like fruit as well as coffee and tea served throughout the day. Residents also have access to a variety of recreational activities during their daily free time, as the facility maintains a running track, basketball and volleyball courts, billiards and ping-pong tables. There is also a daily exercise class scheduled in gender-specific sessions. Average stays at Charlie’s Place are around 30 days. After the first 21 days, clients may be eligible for day passes to visit with family members.

Treatment and Staff

The treatment process at Charlie’s Place is comprised of three distinct phases. Clients in need must complete medical detox prior to general treatment. This process typically lasts three to seven days during which time residents do not participate in group sessions. This phase is overseen by an on-staff nursing team which is available 24/7 with a medical doctor on-staff who makes daily visits.

Following this, clients begin the main phase of treatment called the Intensive Residential Treatment phase, which lasts between 14 and 35 days. This phase is comprised of several group therapy sessions each day along with weekly individual therapy led by LADCs. Additional one-on-one sessions can be scheduled as needed.

Charlie’s Place is geared towards 12-step recovery; in addition to attending on-site nightly AA/NA meetings, group sessions also incorporate 12-step related concepts. Specialty group sessions are offered as well, addressing topics like anger management, parenting and relapse prevention. There is also a family program with sessions scheduled on Saturdays from 9 am to noon.

The final phase of treatment at Charlie’s Place is called the Supportive Residential Program, which comes on the heels of the above and typically lasts an additional 14 to 35 days. This is a continuation of the intensive phase, with an emphasis on clients establishing long-term housing and pursuing employment. Residents continue to attend group and individual sessions at a stepped down pace, allowing them to work with their case managers on housing and employment matters. It’s also worth noting that while Charlie’s Place offers state-funded care to those who qualify in the intensive phase, the supportive residential program is typically only available to self-paying clients.

Extras

Aftercare is offered to alumni and those who complete the residential program can continue attending group sessions and on-site 12-step meetings at the facility after their stay. There is no dual diagnosis care offered at Charlie’s Place but those in need are referred to an accommodating facility.

For those seeking outpatient services, Charlie’s Place also offers a standard outpatient program held at their residential facility. Clients attend two group therapy sessions a week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 8 pm and one individual session a week. The program covers topics similar to those in the residential program.

In Summary

As a long-standing facility with a distinguished history, the program at Charlie’s Place Recovery Center is a comprehensive multi-phase recovery program for men and women with both inpatient and outpatient tracks as well as medical detox. Clients can expect long-term recovery options that include an aftercare program. In all, Charlie’s Place Recovery Center is a solid program that incorporates the family and the 12-steps for a lasting foundation o recovery for body, mind and spirit.
