Charles K. Post Addiction Treatment Center Review
Serving residents of Suffolk and Nassau counties for 60 years, the Charles K. Post Addiction Treatment Center in West Brentwood, New York is a state-funded, long-term residential and transitional care facility. In addition to alcohol and substance abuse treatment with dual diagnosis support, CK Post also has special offerings, including women-only and criminal justice programs.
Accommodations and Food
This 79-bed facility has mostly double and triple occupancy rooms, each containing a bed, closet and desk for each resident. Singles are sometimes available if space permits, but all bathrooms are shared. After treatment is completed, clients can elect to move across the hall into the transitional unit where 21 additional beds are allocated for ongoing care. There are several gender-separate lounges in the facility. Cell phones and other electronic devices are not permitted.
Three meals a day of good variety as well as snacks are served in the cafeteria, and dietary restrictions can be accommodated.
Treatment and Staff
CK Post offers an intensive, highly-structured treatment program based on individualized assessments. Services include individual and group therapy and motivational enhancement therapy (MET) for the first four days in the program. AA and NA meetings are held five days a week for anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours each. There’s an emphasis on holistic treatment, including meditation. The facility also offers a variety of self-help groups including AA and NA meetings.
Off-site detox can be arranged prior to admission, with Suboxone sometimes used to treat the withdrawal symptoms of opioid addiction. For those already undergoing methadone treatment upon intake, the facility can help monitor dosage while the client is in its residential or transitional care.
Aside from their main treatment program, CK Post offers a variety of special programs to address relevant issues. The aforementioned women’s program, for example, is based on a “women treating women” model that explores the unique issues related to females and substance abuse. The criminal justice program helps residents learn how their substance abuse is related to their legal difficulties. The employment program teaches residents resume writing, how to fill out job applications and how to identify their skills and strengths in preparation for moving into the workforce after treatment, among other skills.
Sunday afternoons are allocated for family visits and education. Residents are encouraged to share their progress and concerns to help family and significant others understand chemical dependence and its impact on loved ones. Information about family self-help groups and post-treatment professional assistance are available for visitors.
The professional staff is comprised of physicians, a psychiatrist and a psychologist, registered nurses, alcohol and substance abuse counselors, clinical social workers and recreational therapists. Credentials include CASAC, CSW and CTRS.
Discharge planning is an integral part of the program, and an aftercare is required before clients can be released. Part of CK Post’s overall message is that residents must continue to rigorously self-assess and monitor themselves following treatment to ensure that relapse doesn’t occur.
Extras
Aside from their inpatient and other specialized programs, the facility also provides services for Spanish-speaking clients and the hearing-impaired.
