Changing Tides Treatment CentersChanging Tides Treatment Review

Changing Tides Treatment Centers provides several levels of substance abuse treatment, including detox, inpatient, outpatient and sober living. Its intimate residential program is situated in a scenic spot between the beach and the bay in Ventura, California, just north of Los Angeles.

The CARF-accredited Changing Tides is equipped to provide dual diagnosis support and emphasizes wellness activities, including nutritional counseling and exercise, in addition to its core program of evidence-based and experiential therapy. Changing Tides opened its doors in August 2016 after having operated successful sober living and outpatient facilities for the previous two years.

Accommodations and Food

Clients reside in a sun-filled, well-appointed residence with beach and bay views. The home has a modern décor with flat-screen TVs and common areas for games, reading and recovery homework. The home only treats six clients at a time and most have private rooms. Clients are not permitted electronics in the first week of their stay; however, phones and laptops are permitted on a case-by-case basis thereafter.

Changing Tides believes that optimal nutrition is an integral part of recovery. It employs a chef who prepares nutritionally dense and appealing meals such as super food smoothies and salads.

Treatment and Staff

Clients in need of detox are in medically supervised detox in the home for five to seven days or longer, depending on their health and progress. As soon as they’re able, they can begin attending daily treatment groups with the other residential clients.

The day starts at 8 am with a morning meditation and devotional session. Clients then proceed to full days of individual and group therapy and psychoeducation classes on the disease of addiction and life skills. Treatment at Changing Tides uses CBT, DBT, Moral Recognition Therapy (MRT) and EMDR for clients in need of processing trauma.

The treatment team includes physicians, psychologists, LMFTs and CATC counselors. A consulting psychiatrist is available for dual diagnosis support. Counselors work with clients to help determine if peer support framework would be beneficial and helps them locate 12-step, SMART Recovery and/or Refuge Recovery meetings.

Changing Tides also has a client advocate to ensure that each resident’s treatment plan is adjusted to their needs and progress. Advocates also help clients create aftercare plans that cater to their strengths and vulnerabilities.

The curriculum includes several sessions of experiential therapy each week, including yoga, art, music and cinema therapy and mindfulness walks on the beach.

Clients are taken to a nearby gym several times a week for exercise. On Saturdays, the staff organizes in-town recreational trips such as museum visits, movies and shopping.

For aftercare, many of Changing Tides residential clients continue treatment in its outpatient and/or sober living home. The facility organizes monthly alumni barbecues and hosts a weekly relapse prevention group for alumni. Changing Tides also has plans to institute family recovery groups and workshops.

In Summary

Changing Tides Treatment Centers’ intimate residential program provides clients with highly individualized treatment plans that incorporate dual diagnosis support and extensive wellness activities. Its pleasant and serene beachside location and gourmet menu plans help clients feel relaxed and rejuvenated while deeply exploring recovery issues such as trauma, relationship skills and relapse prevention.
