Changes Place Review
Changes Place is an outpatient treatment facility in The Rockford suburbs of Freeport and Loves Park, Illinois. Since 2001, the facility has offered individualized therapy with a holistic approach to adult men and women seeking treatment for addiction, with special emphasis on court-ordered clients and DUIs. All clients are treated through a combination of individual and group therapy.
Treatment and Staff
After an in-depth assessment by an intake counselor, clients are placed in either an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) which requires over nine hours of counseling per week or a basic outpatient program which only requires three. If placed in IOP, clients generally participate in three group sessions and one individual session per week. Due to the individualized nature of the program, however, clients who want to have only group or individual therapy can also do so.
If attending basic outpatient, clients should expect to attend one group and one individual session per week. Unless there is a specific amount of hours a client must complete due to a court order, there are no set amount of sessions individuals must attend in order to complete their treatment. Each participant gets treatment at their own pace, usually with more frequent counseling before stepping down to once or twice a month.
Therapy at Changes Place uses a mix of CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), drug and alcohol education and mindfulness, which includes meditation. Group sessions cover topics such as anger management, parenting skills, life and coping skills and relapse prevention. Though treatment is not based on 12-step philosophy, the staff can still offer referrals to local meetings.
The small facility is run by Jack and Trisha Phillips, a father and daughter team who together have 30 years of counseling experience between them. Both are CADCs and Jack has been in recovery since 1989.
Extras
An aftercare program is available in either individual or group form once a week for clients who wish to continue with treatment on a less intensive level. This treatment is available to all clients for as long as they wish to attend.
In Summary
Although Changes Place only offers outpatient care, it stands apart due to its individualized approach to treating clients. The facility and staff are small but the range of treatment options includes a bevy of evidence-based therapy options as well as 12-step support. For those looking for a more intimate and flexible outpatient option in Illinois, Changes Place is worth looking into.
