Located just outside of Bristol in England, Chandos House is a residential treatment facility that specializes in the care of men struggling with alcohol and substance use disorders as well as surface addictions like gambling and co-occurring disorders such as depression and trauma. Chandos seeks to heal the “whole person” through the treatment of the client’s mind, body and spirit. To this end, the facility utilizes a holistic approach that integrates a range of therapeutic methods including evidence-based therapies, holistic models, medication management and recreational activities.
Chandos is situated in a rustic, stone building on a quiet, residential street. With 15 beds, residents can sleep in single, double and triple bedrooms. The facility believes that peer support is a key component to relapse prevention. As such, the home provides multiple communal areas including a shared kitchen, living room, common area and outdoor courtyard. Chandos offers several amenities such as a croquet lawn, office, fireplace, TVs, comfortable leather couches and a patio with a barbecue grill. Residents prepare and cook their own meals.
Treatment and Staff

Clients engage in daily group sessions, weekly individual therapy and weekly health and wellness consults about nutrition and physical fitness. In addition, the facility offers a range of holistic options like creative writing and mindfulness meditation as well as art, music and dance therapy. Clients also participate in yoga, speaking circles, acupuncture and the ancient art of shiatsu. Chandos encourages residents to overcome obstacles through outdoor activities like hiking and rappelling.
The Chandos team is comprised of a physician, house manager, addiction specialist, a consulting psychiatrist, counselor, therapists and tutors. Medication management is available for clients with co-occurring disorders.
After completion of the residential plan, clients can participate in a free weekly aftercare group as well as individual sessions.
