A private, non-profit organization, Central New York Services has provided mental health and substance abuse treatment for over 20 years. With behavioral health services available in Oneida and Onondaga Counties, adults and adolescents receive outpatient treatment. Additional housing, financial management, mental health and employment programs are provided through partnerships with other private and government agencies. Located in Utica, New York, Milestones is the CNYS program for adults and adolescents dealing with chemical dependency and mental health issues. The licensed facility exclusively serves residents of Oneida County.
Treatment and Staff
Walk-in assessments are available weekdays and must be completed before individualized treatment plans are created. Treatment length and intensity is determined by individual needs, as is the use of medication-assisted treatment with Suboxone for opiate users. Comprehensive dual diagnosis support is provided through medication management and integrated treatment that includes psychiatric evaluation and tailored therapy. Though on-site and contracted medical staff supervises prescriptions, medically monitored detox is not available.
The outpatient program utilizes evidence-based practices such as the Stages of Change model, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and CBT. Clients attend a variety of group therapy sessions, with individual therapy occurring weekly or bi-weekly. Groups are kept small enough to ensure personalized attention. Though mostly scheduled in the morning and afternoon, evening groups are available for those with work or school commitments. Sessions may be gender-separated and focus on relapse prevention, treating trauma, grief, healthy communication and coping skills.
Staff includes psychiatrists, CASACs, social workers and registered nurses. The client’s clinical team ensures communication through all stages of treatment and assistance with finding additional behavioral, medical, or residential support if required.
Family therapy (which is for loved ones together with substance abusers) and parent support groups are part of adolescent programs and suggested for the family of other clients. The DWI programs meet State requirements for court-mandated treatment. Clients ordered to these must complete classes and therapy in a legally determined amount and duration. As an additional component, education groups discuss the causes and consequences of substance abuse, which can be useful for interrupting the momentum of dysfunctional behavior.
Additional supplementary services may be included if suitable. For example, groups and community resources specializing in LGBTQ clients, adolescents and those with co-occurring disorders are available.
The Milestones program at Central New York Services allows adolescents and adults struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues to receive essential treatment. The outpatient services are great for those transitioning from higher levels of care, or needing support in establishing recovery. With a large network of affiliated organizations, residents of Oneida County find affordable help.
