Central Minnesota Mental Health Center Review
In operation for more than 40 years, the Central Minnesota Mental Health Center provides outpatient mental health and chemical dependency services to clients in Benton, Sherborne, Stearns and Wright counties. Short-term inpatient treatment is available for those who require halfway house support or detox services. The main campus of Central Minnesota Mental Health is located in St. Cloud, with an additional rehab unit in Annandale.
Treatment and Staff
At the St. Cloud facility, treatment methods include CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Each client has individual therapy at least once a week, though additional sessions can be scheduled depending on the client’s needs. Group sessions, which take place twice a week for three hours, address issues such as addiction, triggers and relapse prevention. Clinicians and clients also discuss the causes and impacts of addiction. Regular outpatient treatment lasts for two to three months.
The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) helps clients who may need a deeper level of intervention. IOP groups meet on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 am to 11:30 am, with treatment lasting approximately 24 weeks.
Central Minnesota Mental Health uses both the 12-step and SMART Recovery models. Clients are given “homework assignments” to help them “work the steps” or figure out how and why using substances harms themselves and those around them. Detox services are available.
The two staff clinicians in the St. Cloud office have LADC credentials.
Extras
Families can participate in the Central Minnesota Mental Heath family program, with sessions held once a month. Families are also encouraged to write what are called “therapeutic letters,” which allow them to vent their feelings, thoughts and reactions about a family member’s substance abuse.
Aftercare consists of sober support and attendance at AA or NA meetings. In addition, all alumni are free to check in with Central Minnesota Mental Heath Center if they feel the need, whether they are having a difficult time maintaining sobriety or if they want to celebrate a victory over the temptation to use.

For people in central Minnesota who are struggling with substance abuse, the Central Minnesota Mental Health Center’s St.Cloud and Annandale facilities offer solid conventional treatment with individual and group sessions and a 12-step or SMART Recovery approach. Nothing fancy and no frills, but clients can find competent outpatient and intensive outpatient treatment with dual diagnosis support if needed.
