Center for Eating Disorders Review

Ann Arbor, Michigan’s Center for Eating Disorders (CED) was established in 1983 to provide structured outpatient treatment for adolescents and adults who are suffering from anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder. Programming include educational services, group and individual therapy, trauma evaluation and treatment, and personalized plans with the end goal being long term recovery.

Treatment and Staff

Upon admission to CED clients undergo a thorough assessment that includes a medical and psychological evaluation. Treatment is comprised of an individualized program of medical care and medication management, and a schedule of counseling. In the case that new clients need an elevated level of care before beginning their treatment at CED, the staff is able to assist in coordinating that move.

There are several program offerings at CED that include recovery support groups for adults and adolescents. The Bodywise Recovery Group meets on Wednesday afternoons from noon to 1 pm. This group is for those who are dealing with emotional and yo yo dieting and is an excellent program to work, in conjunction with a personalized counseling and nutritional program that clients are given once they begin treatment at this facility.

Another essential program through CED is the Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders program. It utilizes Family Based Therapy (FBT) as the main treatment protocol. This program addresses body image and weight concerns and is open to children of all ages.

In addition, CED recently partnered up with St. Joseph Mercy Hospital to expand their eating disorders services with a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for teens. It focuses on young men and women who are dealing with eating and body issues.

Programming through CED is evidence-based and includes CBT, DBT, trauma-informed care, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. Throughout their treatment clients meet with their therapists to work on relapse prevention and develop life and coping skills for after they have completed their formalized care.

The staff of CED inlcudes LCSWs, LPCs, LMSWs, ACSWs, a nutritionist, psychiatrists and medical doctors.
