With locations throughout the United States, Center for Discovery is a behavioral health organization catered toward clients struggling with eating disorders and co-occurring mental health issues. The company was founded in 1997 and holds an accreditation from the Joint Commission. Center for Discovery‘s residential location in the Orlando suburb of Monteverde provides care for adolescent boys and girls.
Accommodations and Food
The facility is a secluded brick home in a discreet, countryside setting with a total of eight beds available for residents. Each of the gender-specific rooms comes with two full size beds, end tables, dressers, carpeted floors and shared closet space. In addition to the bedrooms, the facility also has all the regular features of a residential home including shared common areas with cable TV and WiFi, a dining room, an expansive kitchen with marble countertops, an outdoor lounge area and therapy rooms.
Throughout their stay, all residents are served three meals a day by on-staff chefs and nutritionists; as they progress through the program, clients take more responsibility in the kitchen and help preparing food.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, all residents go through an initial intake and assessment process to help staff members develop their treatment plans. If an incoming resident is struggling with chemical dependency, on-site detox services are not available, though clients can get referrals to nearby programs as necessary. Once stabilized, residents attend programs that feature individual, group and family therapy rooted in evidence-based practices including CBT, DBT and Exposure Prevention Therapy (ERP). Group topics include trigger identification, body image, shame resiliency and relapse prevention. Because the program focuses primarily on eating disorders, all clients attend nutritional counseling, cooking classes and other food-exposure related groups.
Trauma-informed care is also available, as is dual diagnosis support with medication management whenever necessary. Though 12-step participation is not required, referrals are available to nearby peer support groups upon completion of a program.
The staff at Center for Discovery Orlando consists of dietitians, LMFTs, Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDS) and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
Holistic methods are also included in treatment such as Somatic Experiencing, art therapy, Zumba classes, yoga, nature hikes and mindfulness training. Equine therapy is available at the on-site equestrian center as well. The company also has a mobile app to help graduating clients track their meals and learn dietary information.
Those who complete primary care can also attend outpatient therapy at a nearby Center for Discovery outpatient location as a form of stepped down aftercare. Center for Discovery also has programs in California, Washington, Connecticut, Virginia, New Jersey, Florida, Texas and Oregon.
