Center for Discovery is a nationwide, Joint Commission-accredited organization providing treatment for eating disorders and co-occurring disorders to men, women and adolescents. The company has a number of facilities throughout the country with both outpatient and residential treatment plans available. More specifically, the organization’s program in Fairfield, Connecticut provides residential treatment to adult and teen women.
Accommodations and Food
The Fairfield location is a sprawling home in a discreet suburban area with a total of six beds available for residents. Bedrooms are shared between two clients each with full beds, carpeted floors, end tables, dressers, windows to let natural light in and closet space. The decor throughout the home is modern but comfortable, with a well-appointed dining room, shared living areas with sofas and cable TV, therapy rooms and an expansive kitchen with marble countertops. Though the facility has on-staff chefs to prepare three meals a day for residents, clients gradually take more responsibility for cooking their own food as they progress through the program.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, all participants go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the clinical team design their treatment plans. Because the programs offered focus primarily on eating disorders rather than addiction, on-site detox services are not available. Though programs may differ by client, each includes individual, group and family therapy with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT, DBT and Exposure Response Prevention (ERP). Additional trauma-informed care is also worked into the curriculum including EMDR as necessary.
Because disordered eating is the main focus of the program, residents also go through regular nutritional counseling and cooking classes. Dual diagnosis support and medication management is also included. Though 12-step participation is not a required part of the program, those who complete primary care can get referrals to off-site peer support groups as necessary.
The staff at Center for Discovery Fairfield consists of Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDS), LCSWs, dietitians, LPCs, LMSWs, MDs, psychiatrists and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
Holistic therapy is also featured in treatment including Somatic Experiencing, art therapy, yoga, Zumba classes, nature hikes, mindfulness training and gym time. Equine therapy may also be available. In addition to the above, Center for Discovery also provides programs in California, Washington, Connecticut, Virginia, New Jersey, Florida, Texas and Oregon. Once clients finish primary care, they can work with staff members to step down the intensity of their programs as a form of aftercare.
