Center for Discovery Fairfax Review
With facilities throughout the country, Center for Discovery is a expansive behavioral health organization founded in 1997 which provides treatment services to clients struggling with eating disorders and related behavioral health issues. The company holds a Joint Commission accreditation and offers programs for men, women, adolescents and adults. Center for Discovery Fairfax in Virginia offers residential care for adolescent boys and girls in the suburbs of Washington DC.
Accommodations and Food
The Fairfax facility is a brick residential home in a discreet and wooded countryside neighborhood with eight total beds. Each of the bedrooms comes with two full beds and comforters, end tables, modest decorations, wood floors and shared closet space. In addition to the rooms, the house also has a tall spiral staircase, shared living areas with comfortable furniture and cable TV, WiFi, therapy rooms, a dining room, an outdoor patio and gazebo area and a fully-equipped kitchen.
Throughout their stay, clients are served three meals a day by on-staff chefs and nutritionists. As they progress through the program, residents take more responsibility for their own meals as they get more comfortable in the kitchen.
Treatment and Staff
Before treatment begins, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help staff members develop their treatment plans. While on-site detox services are not available, those in need can get referrals to nearby programs as necessary.
Once stabilized, all residents attend individual, group and family therapy rooted in evidence-based treatment practices including CBT, DBT and Exposure Prevention Therapy (ERP). Trauma-informed care services include EMDR and group sessions covering shame resiliency, healthy body image, trigger identification and relapse prevention. Clients also attend nutritional counseling and cooking classes to help them develop a healthy relationship with food. Dual diagnosis support and medication management are available as well. While 12-step participation is not required, those who finish a program can get referrals to nearby peer support meetings as necessary.
The staff at Center for Discovery Fairfax consists of dietitians, LMFTs, physician, psychiatrist, Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDS), LCSWs, LPCs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Holistic therapy also includes art therapy, Somatic Experiencing, yoga, gym time, Zumba classes and mindfulness training. Those who complete primary care can also work with staff members to arrange outpatient care at a nearby location as an aftercare option.
In addition to the location above, Center for Discovery also offers programs in California, Washington, Connecticut, Virginia, New Jersey, Florida, Texas and Oregon. Finally, the organization also has its own mobile app which helps alums track their meals and learn dietary information.
In all, Center for Discovery Fairfax is a balanced residential program for young people with treatment available for eating disorders and related behavioral health issues. Programs include individual and group therapy with evidence-based practices, holistic therapy, nutritional counseling and dual diagnosis support. Although the price of treatment may vary depending on each client’s insurance, Center for Discovery Fairfax is an excellent resource for adolescent boys and girls in the area.
