The Basics
Founded in 1997, Center for Discovery is a nationwide organization that provides flexible treatment services for clients struggling with eating disorders and related dual diagnosis issues. The company is Joint Commission-accredited and provides treatment plans for men, women, adults and adolescents alike. More specifically, its facility in Atlanta, Georgia provides residential care for teen boys and girls.
Accommodations and Food
The Atlanta facility is a Southern-style brick house in a quiet residential neighborhood with six beds available for residents in shared, gender separate rooms. Each comes with two full beds with plush comforters, end tables with lamps, dressers, carpeted floors and shared closet space. In addition to the rooms, the home also features all the standard elements of a home including comfortable common areas with cable TV and WiFi, a dining room, therapy rooms and a fully-equipped kitchen. While the facility has on-staff chefs to cook and prepare three meals a day for residents, clients gradually take more responsibility in the kitchen and learn to make their own healthy meals.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help staff members develop their treatment plans. Though on-site detox services for substance abuse are not available, those in need can get referrals to nearby programs. Though the specifics of each plan may vary somewhat, programs feature individual, group and family therapy rooted in evidence-based treatment practices including CBT, DBT and Exposure Prevention Therapy (ERP). Trauma-informed care is available which includes EMDR. Groups cover a wide range of topics including trigger identification, healthy body image, shame resiliency and relapse prevention. To help teach healthy eating habits, clients also attend nutritional counseling and cooking classes as well. Dual diagnosis support is available as well, including medication management. Though 12-step participation is not required, referrals are available upon request.
The staff at Center for Discovery Atlanta consists of Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDS), dietitians, LMFTs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
The curriculum also includes a range of holistic practices such as Somatic Experiencing, art therapy, yoga, Zumba classes, nature hikes and mindfulness training. Residents who complete a primary care plan can continue on to outpatient therapy as a stepped down aftercare option.
In addition to the Atlanta location, Center for Discovery also runs similar programs in California, Washington, Connecticut, Virginia, New Jersey, Florida, Texas and Oregon. Finally, the organization also has its own mobile app which helps clients track their own meals and learn dietary information.
