Center for Children’s Behavioral Health Review

Located in Fairfield, New Jersey, the Center for Children’s Behavioral Health is a behavioral health organization that provides outpatient, Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) for children and adolescents. The main goal of these treatment plans is to help clients avoid full hospitalization or inpatient services. While the majority of care addresses mental health issues, support for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders is available for the older groups as well.

Treatment and Staff

Upon intake, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the staff members develop treatment plans. Because the organization is a non-medical facility, on-site detox services are not available. Still, those in need of referrals can get them as necessary.

Once stabilized, clients can continue on to either Partial Care Day Programs (akin to a PHP) or an IOP. They are grouped by age, namely five to eight, eight to 10 and 11 to 13 years old. The former meets for five days a week from 8:45 am to 2:45 pm whereas IOP typically meets five times a week from 3 to 6 pm. In both treatment tracks, clients attend group, family and individual therapy with evidence-based practices including CBT and DBT though the specifics may vary by practitioner.

Care plans are primarily psychiatric in nature, with groups covering a range of topics including psychoeducation, social skills, self-esteem and anger management. As mentioned, dual diagnosis support services are also available including medication management. Though 12-step participation is generally not a required part of the programming, those in need can get referrals to peer support groups like Al-Anon as necessary.

The staff at the Center for Children’s Behavioral Health consists of psychiatrists, MDs, LMFTs, LPCs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

Additional holistic therapy sessions are also worked into treatment including art therapy and play therapy. On-site academic counseling may also be available as necessary. Those who complete one of the above programs and need to step down their care can also work with clinicians to develop aftercare plans.

In Summary

Overall, the Center for Children’s Behavioral Health is a relatively niche but still thorough option for younger clients seeking comprehensive outpatient care for mental health issues. All participants are grouped off by age and sent through programs with psychiatric support, evidence-based practices and referral services for any additional care needed. For families with adolescents in the area, Center for Children’s Behavioral Health is a strong and specific resource worth considering.
