Grover Beach CaliforniaThe Basics

Founded in 1985, Casa Solana is a non-profit sober living home for women, providing a safe and structured communal living environment for women in the early stages of recovery. Located in Grover Beach, California, Casa Solana is the only sober living home in San Luis Obispo County. Following a social model that encourages experiential learning, clients at Casa Solana are supported through a number of community programs, activities and resources. Past residents are encouraged to stay connected, and make up a large portion of the volunteer staff.

Accommodations and Amenities

Located in a quaint residential neighborhood, Casa Solana is furnished to accommodate as many women as possible. While basic, all necessary linens, storage items and kitchen appliances for comfortable living are provided. Many items are donated, and clients and volunteers keep the grounds in shape. Women are expected to keep their personal areas clean and tidy, as well as contribute to a rotating list of chores. Though few additional amenities are offered, Casa Solana is located near the beach, shops and 12-step meetings.

Rules and Regulations

All women over 18 with substance abuse or addiction issues are allowed to apply. Clients enter Casa Solana on a voluntary basis, making a commitment to stay at least 90 days. Many stay longer. The goal of sober living is to safely transition women into independent living, minimizing the risk for relapse. Continued education or job training facilitates this, and women are expected to pursue either one. While referrals to dual diagnosis support services are made, and prescribed medications allowed, clients must be physically and mentally fit enough to live without medical supervision.

In-house 12-step meetings are held twice a day, Mondays through Fridays. Clients are encouraged to attend, though it is also open to those that aren’t residents. Sponsorship and step work are suggested as a way to maintain sobriety, as is recovery planning and relapse prevention. With the support of peers and staff, clients learn skills to build self-esteem and communication. Women are required to maintain sobriety, and can be subjected to random drug screening. Any drug and alcohol use will result in eviction, as will acts of violence.

Extras

Clients looking for extra help receive counseling in topics including sex education, smoking cessation, parenting, nutrition and hygiene.

In Summary

Casa Solana provides an essential service for women in San Luis Obispo County transitioning from active substance abuse into sober, independent living. The program assists many women with a supportive, structured and loving environment. Due to donations, volunteer contributions and government grants, fees are kept very low. Funded beds are available and no woman is refused for inability to pay. Monthly costs can be offset with volunteer work or and clients pay on a sliding scale determined by income.
