The Basics

Based in the San Francisco suburb of Concord, California, Casa Serena is a behavioral health organization that provides outpatient treatment for eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia and binge eating. The programs at Casa Serena are designed to serve the Bay Area by offering extra support for those who have completed inpatient programs. The facility provides Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) for men and women, as well as a specialized IOP track for young women ages 13 to 17.

Treatment and Staff

Upon intake, each client goes through an initial assessment process to help the staff develop their individualized treatment plan. The adult IOP meets four days a week from 4:30 to 8:30 pm. The after school Teen IOP runs Mondays through Thursdays 4 to 7 pm. Both options include evening meal service. The staff eats dinner with the clients to model healthy behavior. There are also restaurant outings and challenge meals throughout the program to help clients desensitize in social settings. They also have the opportunity to plan a menu, shop for the ingredients and prepare a quick and easy meal each week.

The primary goal at Casa Serena is to assist clients in addressing the underlying issues that drive eating disorders and help them develop positive coping skills. Most participants struggle with co-occurring disorders anxiety, depression and trauma. While the specifics may vary, both programs include individual therapy, group therapy, holistic treatments and regular psychiatric consultations. Weekly multi-family groups are also included as are weekly nutritional consultations.

All treatment is based in evidence-based practices such as trauma-informed CBT and DBT. Groups cover a range of additional topics including psychoeducation, relapse prevention, social and communication skills. Those struggling with addiction may also attend 12-step meetings in addition to therapy, though this is not required.

The staff at Casa Serena consists of MDs, LMFTs, RNs, psychiatrists, psychologists and additional Master’s and PhD-level counselors. Many of the staff have personal experience in recovery from eating disorders.

Extras

The program also includes a number of holistic therapies like yoga and mindfulness.

In Summary

Casa Serena provides comprehensive and individualized treatment for men, women and female teens struggling with eating disorders and dual diagnosis issues. Though the cost may vary depending on insurance coverage, Casa Serena is an excellent option for outpatient eating disorder treatment in the Bay Area.
