westminster marylandCarroll County Alcohol and Addiction Program Review

Carroll County Alcohol and Addiction Program in Westminster, Maryland offers outpatient substance abuse treatment for adults. The program follows the traditional model of recovery which prioritizes total abstinence from drugs and alcohol, therapy and the 12-step recovery model. Each client receives an individualized program to address their specific problems. Family involvement is encouraged and thanks to state funding, clients can pay for treatment on a sliding scale.

Treatment and Staff

Carroll County’s outpatient program offers assessments, individual therapy and several different group therapy options for substance abuse. These include education awareness, sobriety support, women’s issues and continued care. Treatment includes discussions on the 12 steps and referrals to local meetings in the community. Detox is not available.

Prior to beginning therapy, each client undergoes an initial evaluation. After this meeting, individual treatment plans are created which include a combination of both group and individual therapy. The frequency and length of each program depends on the client.

Education awareness consists of nine group sessions. During these meetings, clients learn about the addiction as disease model, the recovery process and about the local 12-step community. Sobriety support includes 10 group sessions. Clients discuss issues such as relapse prevention, coping skills, communication and the 12 steps. The women’s group meets for a total of 14 sessions. Each two hour group covers gender-specific issues such as support, spirituality, family dysfunction, addiction education, depression, anxiety, goal setting, relationships, co-dependency and self-esteem.

Continued care is for those who have recently completed residential care and are transitioning back into everyday life. Clients are required to participate in this level for a minimum of six weeks. All participants receive support through weekly group therapy, gaining insights about coping skills and sobriety maintenance.

Individual sessions are each an hour long and usually occur two to four times a month. This private space gives clients time to discuss their issues in detail. This can be done as its own form of treatment or in conjunction with group therapy.

The staff consists of LADCs who lead groups with 10-15 clients at a time.
