East Mountain Youth Lodge Review

As part of the Carrier Clinic organization, East Mountain Youth Lodge (EMYL) is a residential treatment center for boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 18. Carrier Clinic is an expansive behavioral health organization that was established in 1910 in New Jersey. The Carrier Clinic adult substance abuse program is called Blake Recovery Center.

East Mountain Youth Lodge operates four separate programs on the expansive Carrier Clinic campus in Belle Mead, New Jersey. The goal of EMYL is for students who have struggled with addiction and behavioral problems to experience a safe, structured treatment experience. All treatment combines evidence-based methods with education and life skills training. East Mountain Youth Lodge provides also psychiatric services for those who need dual diagnosis support as well as treatment for chemical dependency.

Accommodations and Food

East Mountain Youth Lodge is set on the beautiful Carrier Clinic campus that accommodates up to 85 girls and boys. There is a housing complex adjacent to East Mountain School, with males and females from the different programs housed in separate sections in dorm-style bedrooms and bathrooms. Sleeping quarters are furnished with twin beds and linens, as well as storage areas for personal belongings.

Food is served in a large cafeteria with plenty of healthy options as well as comfort food. Sugar intake is monitored and caffeine is not allowed. Additionally, the huge facility has a computer lab, a game room, chapel, art room, library and gym with a fitness center. There is an outdoor in-ground pool, a softball field, tennis, basketball and volley ball courts, hiking trails and a low ropes adventure treatment site.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at East Mountain Youth Lodge typically lasts between six and eight months and is individualized for every client. The treatment tracks—called Bear, Eagle, Butterfly/Dragonfly and Swan—are offered, allowing the facility to provide specific, customized care for students depending on their specific set of issues, age and gender. Treatment in all programs incorporates group and individual therapy to motivate clients to commit to a change and set recovery goals. Clients also learn basics about AA/NA, life skills, coping skills, how to navigate situational problems and functioning with co-occurring disorders.

Since all residents also simultaneously attend school on site at the East Mountain School, learning disabilities are taken into consideration when designing a recovery program and medication management is available if required. There is a special focus on building healthy relationships with family members, learning study skills, physical fitness and appropriate ways to deal with stress. Family members are also integrated into the treatment process and participate in therapy.

The staff at EMYL boasts an impressive group of medical, academic and treatment professionals. The clinical team includes LCSWs, MFTs, nurse practitioners, a medical doctor and psychiatric nurses. Additional staff includes educators, medical support staff, kitchen staff and counselors specifically trained to handle admissions and parent communications.

Extras

EMYL has a comprehensive family program that integrates loved ones in the recovery process, helping to develop healthy communication skills.
