Bloomington CaliforniaCarolee’s Sober Living Review

Founded by recovering alcoholic Carolee Shoemaker just a few miles west of San Bernardino in Bloomington, California, Carolee’s Sober Living provides sober living for women. Based on the idea that every day is a new opportunity for change, Carolee’s Sober Living believes that by providing a nurturing environment, newly clean and sober women will be motivated to rebuild their own lives.

Accommodations and Amenities

Carolee’s Sober Living is a white single-family home with light blue trim located on a cul-de-sac in a quiet residential neighborhood. The house typically accommodates three or four women, in both double and single-occupancy rooms. Founder Carolee Shoemaker lives on the premises. The shared room has rose-colored walls, twin beds and a TV propped on a dresser. The house includes a cozy living room with a fireplace and comfortable couches.

The lavender-walled kitchen is fully equipped. Clients are responsible for their own groceries, and meal preparation. The 30-day cost is $400, with an additional $11 for utilities, and $10 for Cable TV. Amenities include a laundry room, central air and heating, a spacious backyard and Wi-Fi. The house is in close proximity to stores, a library and neighborhood services. There is a designated outdoor smoking area.

Rules and Regulations

Potential clients must have been clean and sober for a minimum of six months, and must also have an AA/NA sponsor. Requirements for employed clients include attendance at a minimum of three weekly 12-step meetings. An unemployed client must attend more meetings and both Shoemaker and the client determine the required quota.

The women must perform household chores, and make sure that the house remains spick and span. Since the house operates on a 12-step protocol, clients must practice AA principles in their daily lives, by being of service, working their steps and being responsible, productive members of society. The curfew is 10 pm seven days a week. At Carolee’s Sober Living, random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. A zero tolerance policy is practiced. Those who have relapsed are immediately dismissed from the premises.

Extras

Carolee’s Sober Living is a member of the Sober Living Network, San Bernardino Sober Living Coalition.

In Summary

At Carolee’s Sober Living, women live in a comfortable, nurturing environment. Shoemaker cares about her clients, offering support and supervision. While she stresses that it is important for clients to be of service, it appears that her sober living home was her way of giving back. She has been clean and sober for 33 years and is still going on strong. For women who yearn to be in a 12-step-based sober living home with a wise “old timer,” Carolee’s Sober Living might be the perfect spot.
