Carmel Summit Retreat Review
Carmel Summit Retreat (CSR) is Practical Recovery’s high-end, co-ed sober living home that has been running for the past four years. It can be found in Carmel Valley of northern San Diego County, a short and scenic ten minute drive away from the seashore. CSR employs a non 12-step approach to recovery with optional 12-step elements if requested.
Accommodations and Amenities
CSR is located near a Vons at Ocean Air Boulevard in the upscale Torrey Hills neighborhood outside Del Mar. CSR staff does not disclose the exact address for privacy reasons. The luxurious six-bedroom CSR home measures 4,700 square feet and provides seven beds. There is one shared bedroom and the rest are all in private rooms. Wireless internet access is provided, as is a large flat-screen TV in the living room and even a fireplace. Food is also provided; in fact a chef prepares gourmet dinners five nights a week. CSR offers access to hiking and surfing as it is in close proximity to beaches.
Rules and Regulations
The CSR sober living house boasts being very structured. The house staff takes care of all chores, while clients attend on-site SMART Recovery meetings. Clients also need to be taking part in an outpatient substance abuse treatment program—either Practical recovery or another—enrolled in school, working or doing volunteer work. Nobody is allowed to hang around the house all day. They are welcome to attend off-site AA/NA meetings if they choose.
CSR also implements supervised drug testing and offers transportation to clinical appointments, as needed. The Practical Recovery outpatient program includes CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI, relapse prevention and EMDR for those who are recovering from trauma.
CSR is managed by a CADC resident house manager and has a 24-hour on-call staff.

Additionally, CSR offers a complimentary membership to 24-Hour Fitness for all residents and them with inclusive weekend outings and group activities like bowling and movies.
In Summary
Carmel Summit Retreat has the benefit of being part of the Practical Recovery umbrella. The lush accommodations, sunny environment and multitude of recreational activities it provides are the cherry on top of the potential access to the full Practical Recovery pie of substance abuse treatment services. The one factor which could be considered a hindrance in attending CSR and undertaking sober living there, would be the cost. The luxury provided does not come cheap. But for those who have an extra few thousand dollars to spend on their sobriety, Carmel Summit Retreat may be just as effective as it is beautiful.
