Carla Vista Ventura HouseCarla Vista Ventura House Review

Otherwise known as Sin City, Las Vegas, Nevada has a surprisingly thriving recovery community. Carla Vista Ventura House, which is part of  a network of sober living homes spread across four states, offers a supportive staff and strong alumni ties, making it a safe space for men to begin their post-treatment journey of recovery.

Accommodations and Amenities

Ventura House is a single story home in a residential neighborhood with six double-occupancy bedrooms. Accommodating a total of 12 men, all rooms are furnished with two full-sized beds and fresh linens. The adjacent bathrooms have spacious showers and towels are provided. Central air conditioning runs throughout the house to keep it cool in the extreme desert summers.

The living and dining rooms offer ample seating with modern and comfortable couches and chairs; cable TV and a DVD player are also provided. The kitchen is fully outfitted with modern appliances and cooking supplies. Food is provided, but if a resident has specific dietary needs they are welcome to bring their own. The home also has an office space for residents, equipped with a communal computer and WiFi. Residents are allowed to  send emails for employment purposes or to stay connected with friends and family. There is also a landline available for local calls.

The outdoor area has a swimming pool and fire pit where residents are invited to enjoy relaxing and socializing. A washer and dryer is available, as well as room for additional storage, if needed.

There is plenty on-property or along the street, but for those without cars, public transportation is easily accessible from the house. Residents are encouraged to explore Las Vegas shopping, restaurants, movie theaters, sober entertainment and 12-step  or recovery-oriented meetings.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admission, potential clients undergo a background screening to ensure they are a good fit for the home. They must be at least 18 years old and have some foundation in recovery—from either an treatment facility or a 12-step program. If a resident is not deemed ready for sober living, the house works directly with American Addiction Centers and A Better Today to facilitate treatment.

Carla Vista residents must make a minimum 90-day commitment but all are welcome to stay longer. Residents must be drug and alcohol-free and random drug screenings and breathalyzer tests are conducted in order to ensure this policy is enforced. Unfortunately, relapse is grounds for eviction. There are two compulsory all-house meetings a week and residents are also expected to complete their assigned daily chores. Curfew is 11:00 pm nightly.

Participating in 12-step programs is required and attendance of two daily in-house meetings (featuring an alumni speaker) is enforced. Finding an outside home group and a sponsor is also required, as Carla Vista believes this is an essential part of long-term sobriety. All residents must have a service commitment at one of their meetings (preferably their home group) and are encouraged to participate in the fellowship aspect of 12-step. This can be anything from going out to dinner to seeing movies. Outside visitors are allowed but overnight guests are not permitted.

Within two weeks of residence, clients are expected to have full-time employment, be enrolled in school or involved in an approved volunteer commitment. Many job opportunities are available in Las Vegas, including food service and hospitality.

Extras

All members of the Carla Vista homes are encouraged to stay active during their recovery so a complimentary gym membership to a nearby facility is provided for all residents.

Every year, Carla Vista hosts a sober Super Bowl—a tag-football tournament attended by current residents and alumni of the Carla Vista sober home community. The program also includes capture the flag and kickball tournaments, as well as summer softball leagues, which further the Carla Vista philosophy of bringing people in recovery together and promoting unity and fellowship.

In Summary

Carla Vista Ventura House is part of  a strong network of affordable transitional living homes that generally attract a younger clientele. With a foundation in 12-step principles, residents are able to work directly on the spiritual and mental issues which contribute to their substance abuse. Keeping members active in sobriety with athletic activities, fellowship and a sense of community provides hope and a new way of life for those seeking extended support in early sobriety.
