CareNZ Review

CareNZ is a community based drug treatment program that has been serving the country of New Zealand since 1999. It offers assessments, individual therapy, 12-step meetings and group based Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP). Additionally, CareNZ provides those who have been incarcerated due to drugs with programming that aids in developing life and coping skills for when they are released. CareNZ’s services are open to anyone who is looking to free themselves from their addictions, including adolescent clientele.

Treatment and Staff

All community services are individualized and for the most part, between public and prison programming, the services are free of charge. Individual clients are given an assessment when seeking treatment to determine whether or not an addiction program is needed, and if there are any concerns in terms of having a co-occurring disorder. There are also assessments for those who have a conviction for driving under the influence, and another for repeat offenders. These particular assessments result in a placement into a group based, educational track that offers safe driving skills, managing high risk situations and victim awareness.

The IOP is known as the Living Free program and consists of relapse prevention, coping skills, life skills, and addiction education. This track is mainly group based. The IOP has additional individual therapy available—usually around 12 sessions—as an added element of support through the IOP. Individual counseling can also be a client’s sole way of getting treatment through the community services as well. Both the IOP and one-on-one tracks address co-occurring disorders as well.

Several recovery groups are offered on a weekly basis. The recovery groups are 12-step based, with one of the groups geared towards clients who are already in recovery and need support to remain that way, and the other is for those who have stopped using their drug of choice but may have picked up another substance instead.

The prison based programs offer education and counseling for those who are currently incarcerated for drug related crimes and are in need of a treatment program to help them with their addiction. The other main inmate program is for those who are slated to be released in the near future; it offers housing and job assistance, mental health assessments, and social work services for the client and their families to help them have a smooth reintegration back into their communities. These prison programs are granted through referrals issued by prison staff.

CareNZ’s staff includes alcohol and drug counselors, case managers, social workers and mental health clinicians.

In Summary

CareNZ’s programming within the community and prison systems offer alternative solutions and educational addiction treatment with a strong foundation in the 12 steps. There are several ways to access these programs, all of which are individualized and non judgmental. CareNZ aims to provide the much needed mental health and addiction treatment throughout New Zealand.
