honolulu hawaiiCARE Hawaii Review

CARE Hawaii is a behavioral healthcare organization founded in 1999 offering mental health, behavioral health and substance abuse services throughout Hawaii. Chemical dependency services are available for adults, adolescents and children, with both Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and basic outpatient services available. With individualized treatment plans designed to meet each client’s unique needs, CARE treatment utilizes a mixture of 12-step recovery and evidence based practices.

Treatment and Staff

Following an initial assessment, individualized treatment plans are developed incorporating the schedules and recovery needs of each client. Support for co-occurring disorders is available, although clients in need of detox or residential care must be referred elsewhere.

CARE’s adult IOP offers a high level of support, with three hours of therapy three times a week for 12 to 16 weeks. Treatment includes both individual and group therapy. Using CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), clients work on recognizing their triggers and changing negative thought patterns. Therapy covers topics like relapse prevention, coping skills, early recovery skills and anger management. Referrals to local 12-step meetings in the community are provided upon request. Support for mental health issues such as depression and anxiety can be addressed during therapy as well.

The adolescent IOP is similar to the adult program, though it lasts for three to six months in total. Special features of this track include an art therapy program and family education. Prior to completing treatment, clients participate in a graduation ceremony to showcase their artistic talents.

Once IOP has been completed, clients can step down into general outpatient which follows a similar structure to IOP, but meeting with less frequency. Clients typically come for one or two three-hour sessions per week. This track includes both individual and group therapy. Duration of treatment varies depending on each client’s needs.

The staff consists of psychiatrists, registered nurses, psychologists, social workers, Master’s-level therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) behavioral specialists and case managers. Group sizes usually range from 15 to 20 clients at a time.

Extras

Services such as residential treatment, case management, crisis intervention and group therapy are available for mental illness. Children are provided with special services including individual, group and family therapy, educational planning and early interventions as well as help with developmental delays.

In Summary

CARE Hawaii offers a fairly thorough substance abuse treatment rooted in evidence based therapies, with additional programs for those suffering from mental illnesses. Through a mixture of individual and group therapy, clients learn new ways to cope with triggers. CARE Hawaii is ideal for individuals seeking a continuum of mental health care which has a holistic approach to treatment promoting the health of the body, mind and spirit.
