Baton Rouge LouisianaCapital Area Human Services Review

Founded in 1997, Capital Area Human Services provides mental and behavioral health services for communities across Louisiana. Over the years, it has grown into a network of facilities in more than seven parishes throughout the state. CAHS prides itself on accessibility and affordability, with a diverse array of programs including co-ed outpatient treatment, a 28-day residential program for men and treatment for co-occurring disorders. All programs utilize evidence-based methods of care and a continuum of tracks allowing clients to step down as they progress in their recovery.

Food and Accommodations

Men enrolled in the short-term residential track are accommodated in dormitory-style housing, sharing a room with one other client. YMCA-style bathrooms are also shared. There is a recreation room with cable TV, computers and games as well as lounging areas. A living room, separate rooms for meetings and a fully equipped kitchen are also available. Meals are provided three times a day in a cafeteria-style setting and feature healthy, American-fare with a vegetable dish, a meat or fish and some type of pasta or bread.

Treatment and Staff

The substance abuse treatment program at CAHS is highly individualized. Clients undergo a biopsychosocial assessment to determine which program is the best fit and which treatment type is most ideal.

The residential program consists of individual and group therapy, educational lectures, treatment for co-occurring disorders, on-site 12-step meetings, medication management, family therapy, recreation activities and assistance with integration back into the community.

Clients enrolled in the outpatient program attend several weekly groups with meetings scheduled in both the evenings and during the day to accommodate family obligations and work schedules. Individual counseling is scheduled based on the needs of the client, as is family counseling if desired. All clients are required to attend a weekly educational group.

The co-occurring disorder track includes detox, medication management, and specialized programs which include individual and group sessions supporting their integration back into daily life.

All therapies for both programs are DBT and the CAHS staff consists of a licensed psychologist, LPCs, CADCs and LSWs.

Extras

A weekly aftercare group is required of all clients who have completed treatment. Pastoral services are also available to assist clients in building their spiritual lives, as well as parenting, smoking cessation and gambling addiction programs.

In addition to their substance abuse treatment programs, CAHS also offers a variety of other services including mental health counseling services for adults and adolescents, school-based therapy and prevention services for adolescents, a developmental disabilities division and community outreach for education and prevention.

In Summary

CAHS offers a comprehensive and affordable continuum of substance abuse treatment. The gender-specific residential track for men provides thorough evidence based care while the outpatient track caters to the individual needing less acute but flexible programming. With specialized attention for individuals with co-occurring disorders, all individuals requiring substance abuse treatment are ensured a well-rounded and thorough approach for lasting recovery and wellness.
