Candy FinniganLocated in Los Angeles, California, Candy Finnigan is a board recognized interventionist, a published author and a cast member on A&E’s Intervention. She is also a registered addiction specialist, and a CADC, as well as certified in sex addiction and codependency. Finnigan, who has been clean and sober since 1986, also works privately with high-profile clients. Her clients include singers, actors and politicians.

The Background

Finnigan received her intervention training from Dr. Vernon Johnson, the creator of the Johnson Model, in 1991. Finnegan received her Certificate in Alcohol-Drug Counseling Skills and her certificate in Alcohol-Drug Abuse studies from UCLA in 1993. She interned in Addiction Studies at Cedars-Sinai Hospital.

Finnigan went into recovery work with the hopes that she could offer empathy to people who were suffering since she had also gone down a similar path. She is very open about her recovery, and says, “It’s not just my work. It’s my life.”

The Approach

Finnigan’s approach works on the belief that an addict should hit rock bottom, and that intervention helps speed up the process. Family and friends should also practice tough love and break ties, until the individual decides that help is necessary. While only a few minutes of her interventions on the show are broadcasted, Finnigan spends between four and six hours on each procedure. Often when clients see themselves on television, they feel humiliated and seek help.

During her private interventions, Finnigan often asks the families write letters. They write statements to the client, demanding that the person go to detox or residential treatment. Finnigan has relationships with many rehabs, including the Betty Ford Center, Sierra Tucson, Hazelden, The Meadows and Promises Malibu.

In Summary

Finnigan provides relapse prevention, family and individual therapy and aftercare plans. She is highly regarded in her field, and while her approach might seem a bit harsh to some, she is determined to get the job done, and save lives. For families seeking immediate help, “Intervention Request” should be written in the subject line of the email.
