Canaan Land Ministries Review
Canaan Land Ministries was founded in 1981 to provide year-long faith-based residential treatment to men in Autaguaville, Alabama, near Montgomery. Canaan Land Ministries was created by Mac Grober who struggled with addiction following his military service. Through work duties, Bible study and individual counseling, Canaan Land leads men in recovery through providing “direction with affection.” Canaan Land also operates an affiliated program in Mapleton, Australia.
Accommodations and Food
Canaan Land is situated on an 80-acre rural campus that includes a residential building and a chapel. The residence houses up to 18 men at a time. When residents arrive, they’re assigned a room with a “senior student,” a resident in the later phases of treatment who provides mentorship to the new arrival. Once through the first month of treatment, residents are then assigned a private room.
Electronics are not permitted in treatment, though TV is available in the common areas on weekends. Clients have daily chores and rotate through food preparation assignments, ensuring that they gain some experience in meal planning and cooking while in treatment. Residents are also assigned laundry duties for the house. For recreation, clients can play video games and use the gym on the grounds.
Treatment and Staff
For admission, clients submit an application and then have an in-person interview. Those with mental health diagnoses may not be a good fit, as Canaan Land does not provide dual diagnosis support, but determinations are made on a case-by-case basis.
Once in residence, clients have three Bible study classes each day to discuss living in recovery according to Christian principles. They also have four to five hours of work duties each day on campus. There are four counselors on site who have backgrounds in religious counseling and recovery coaching, and they provide individual counseling as-needed. Alumni of the program also work on campus and provide peer support and supervision.
All residents attend services at the property’s chapel twice a week. As clients progress in their Bible studies and work assignments, they can receive GED counseling and help in setting and pursuing additional work and educational goals. Twelve-step recovery principles are not incorporated into the program at Canaan Land.
Extras
After 30 days, residents’ family members can visit before and after Sunday church services. After three months, clients can start earning passes to visit family members off-campus.
In Summary
Canaan Land Ministries provides long-term Christian residential treatment in a peaceful communal atmosphere. With fewer than 20 clients in residence, clients bond with each other and have ample opportunity to learn vocational skills and how to deepen their relationship to Christ in sobriety.
