Cambridge Eating Disorder Center Transitional Living Review

Founded in 2000, Eating Disorder Center is a multi-faceted behavioral health organization which provides a number of flexible treatment programs to clients struggling with eating disorders and related co-occurring disorders. The main facility is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts and holds accreditations from a number of state and national-level regulatory bodies. While it’s primary care programs include outpatient and residential treatment plans, the organization also operates a transitional living facility nearby for those looking for continuing care. The homes are open to women ages 18 and over.

Accommodations and Amenities

Altogether, the organization has three newly renovated three bedroom condo units for a total of nine beds. The transitional living facility is located in the historic Harvard Square neighborhood and is walking distance from the main facility. Throughout their stay, all clients get their own room complete with a full bed, a dresser, a nightstand, desk and a chair. Each home also comes with two full bathrooms which are shared between the residents. All linens are provided. Though the layout of each house may differ somewhat, each also includes on-site laundry, a dining room, common living areas with cable TV and WiFi, game rooms and a fully-equipped kitchen. Though clients are primarily responsible for their own meals, the homes do provide staff assistance to help residents with grocery shopping, meal planning, job searching and other daily necessities.

Rules and Regulations

As with many transitional living facilities, all clients are required to follow basic rules. The facility is substance-free and all residents are thus required to remain sober and active in recovery from their eating disorder throughout their stay. The minimum stay at these residences is 30 days, though residents may stay longer if they need more time to stabilize. All clients are required to remain busy for the duration of the program, which could mean volunteering, going to classes, attending an outpatient program or working a job.

Though residents have the freedom to live their own lives, the fees they pay also cover daily life coaching sessions throughout the program and a weekly group therapy session with a CEDC clinician. All participants are also required to do basic chores throughout the house including keeping their rooms clean, minding the common areas, cleaning the kitchen and doing their own laundry.

Though clients are mostly free to come and go as they please, they must also observe the nightly curfew which is 10 pm Monday through Friday and 11 pm on the weekends.

Extras

Other bonuses include occasional recreational activities, on-site table tennis and periodic arts and crafts areas. Residents are also allowed to have visitors between 7 to 9 pm, Mondays through Fridays.

Because the organization provides so many different programs, those in need of additional support, stepped down aftercare services or referrals to other services can receive them as necessary.

In Summary

Overall, Cambridge Eating Disorder Treatment Center is a well-equipped program with a number of flexible services for clients in recovery from eating disorders. In addition to its primary care services, the organization’s transitional living homes provide structured but flexible programs with supplemental life coaching services to help residents develop their own routines. Though transitional living is not covered by insurance like the primary care programs often are, Cambridge Eating Disorder Treatment Center’s homes remain a strong resource for women in the area.
