Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Cambridge Eating Disorder Center is a behavioral health organization that provides a range of programs for clients struggling with eating disorders and related dual diagnosis issues. The facility was founded in 2000 and has since been accredited by both national and state-level regulatory bodies. In addition to its outpatient options, the facility also provides residential treatment services for adolescent and adult women ages 12 and up.
Accommodations and Food
The residential program has a total of 25 beds available for clients, with separate floors for adults and adolescents. All residents stay in shared rooms with twin beds, dressers, end tables, basic decor and shared closet space. The overall facility is designed as a non-institutional structure and resembles a stately, New England-style house. In addition to the rooms, the home includes shared living areas with cable TV, therapy rooms, a dining area and a fully-equipped kitchen.
Because clients’ relationships with food is a major part of the program, residents are expected to gradually take more responsibility in cooking their own meals. Still, on-staff chefs prepare three meals a day for all clients in the early stages of the program, all with the help of nutritionists and dietitians.
Treatment and Staff
Before treatment begins, all residents go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the staff members understand their needs. Clients continue on to programs which include individual, group and family therapy with a range of evidence-based practices like CBT, CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Dual diagnosis support including medication management services are available as well.
Groups cover a wide range of different topics including anger management, relapse prevention, relationship skills, body awareness and self-esteem. Though 12-step support is not required, those seeking off-site peer support groups can get referrals as necessary. Finally, healthy eating is also stressed throughout the program with the help of nutritional counseling, cooking classes and exposure therapy—the latter can include meals at local restaurants, grocery store trips and other triggering, food-related situations.
The staff at Cambridge Eating Disorder Center consists of psychologists, dietitians, MDs, LCSWs, RNs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Other available services include holistic therapies such as yoga classes, art therapy and Reiki healing sessions. In addition to residential treatment, the organization also has a range of flexible outpatient programs as well as a transitional living home for those who complete primary care. These above programs can also serve as stepped down aftercare programs as well.
In all, Cambridge Eating Disorder Center offers a comprehensive set of treatment programs for clients struggling with eating disorders and related behavioral health issues. Residential care includes evidence-based treatment, holistic supports and plenty of dietary counseling to help clients get back on track. While the price of these programs may vary depending on each participant’s insurance policy, Cambridge Eating Disorder Center’s residential programs are an excellent resource for adult and adolescent women in the area.
