The Basics
Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Cambridge Eating Disorder Center is a multi-faceted organization which offers comprehensive treatment to clients struggling with eating disorders. The program is accredited by a variety of state and national-level regulatory bodies and provides a full continuum of services. In addition to its residential treatment plans, clients can also attend outpatient, Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP).
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all participants go through an initial intake and assessment process to help staff members develop their programs. Although support for co-occurring disorders is provided, those with substance abuse issues in need of detox will need to get referrals for those services before attending a treatment program.
While the modalities of each treatment path are likely similar, each varies in intensity. PHP meets six days a week from 9 am to 3:30 pm, IOP meets a minimum three evenings a week from 5:30 to 8:30 pm and standard outpatient is the most flexible with few hard and fast scheduling requirements.
In all the above, plans consist of individual, group and family therapy with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT, DBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Because food is such a major part of the program, each plan also includes nutritional counseling, body and self image groups, cooking classes and supervised grocery shopping trips. Groups cover a wide range of topics including anger management, relapse prevention, mindfulness and relationship skills. Though 12-step recovery is not required, those seeking referrals to off-site peer support groups can get them upon request.
The staff at Cambridge Eating Disorder Center consists of LCSWs, RNs, psychologists, dietitians, MDs and additional Master’s-level counselors.

Treatment programs also incorporate a wide range of holistic therapies as well, some of which may include yoga classes, Reiki healing and art therapy. Other services include the aforementioned residential treatment program as well as transitional housing services for those who complete primary care. Finally, the less intensive outpatient plans can also function as an aftercare service as well.
