Located in Prince Frederick, Maryland, Calvert County Health Department offers affordable outpatient services to adults and adolescents for chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. Created in the 1920s, the Calvert County Health Department is a governmental organization that provides local public health care services. Currently, the organization has 130 employees and an annual budget of 11 million dollars. The substance abuse clinic uses individual and group therapy to help clients with the recovery process; mental health issues are also addressed through the therapeutic process.

Treatment and Staff

Prior to receiving treatment at this facility, each client must undergo an initial assessment. This process allows the admissions counselor to decide which kind of treatment is best for the individual. While detox, residential services and buprenorphine are not available, referrals to outside facilities can be made. Each program offers separate groups, usually containing between 10 and 20 clients, for adults and adolescents.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) occurs three times a week, for three hours. This 26-week program mainly focuses on group therapy, although each client receives one hour-long individual session per week. Evidence based modalities such as CBT and DBT are used, helping clients learn healthier behaviors and new way of thinking. Group topics vary depending on the age of the clients but include relapse prevention, trauma, employment, self-esteem, parenting, nutrition, introduction to the 12 steps, body image, codependency and coping skills. In addition to addressing substance abuse issues, clients also receive therapeutic support for mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. The cost of this program is $507 per week or based on a sliding scale.

Once the IOP program has been completed, clients can begin a 26-week outpatient program. This option meets once a week, for two-hour sessions, requiring clients to participate in group therapy. Group topics are similar topics to the IOP program, with a greater focus on relapse prevention. The cost of this program is $676 or based on a sliding scale.

Extras

For clients who are just interested in individual counseling or who need additional support during treatment, one-hour individual therapy is available for $92 or based on a sliding scale.

Once clients have been discharged from outpatient, a continuing care program offers sobriety maintenance via telephone recovery check ups. In addition, alcohol and drug education, urinalysis drug testing, breathalyzer and referral services are also available.

In Summary

Through the combination of group therapy, individual therapy and drug and alcohol education, clients are able to find coping skills for substance abuse issues as well as their mental health struggles. With separate groups for adults and adolescents, participants receive treatment that is specific to their age range. Because a sliding scale is available, those in need can obtain treatment regardless of their finances.
