A sober living facility, Caldwell House is located in Lenoir, North Carolina, about 75 miles northwest of Charlotte. Established over 20 years ago, the private not-for-profit organization provides safe and affordable housing for adult males who want to maintain sobriety after residential treatment.

Accommodations and Amenities

The large home can accommodate up to 26 men, who sleep in large, wood-paneled rooms, sharing with one other person. Bedrooms are furnished with twin beds and basic storage cubbies, armchairs and desks. The residence includes several large communal areas complete with fireplaces, sofas and a piano.

Meals are prepared in the fully stocked kitchen, which meets all basic needs. A large dining room is furnished with ample seating and tables for all the clients to eat together.

Rules and Regulations

Caldwell House only accepts applications from adult male clients that have completed at least four weeks at a residential treatment center. The intake process determines the ways the men could potentially benefit from sober living, as well as identifying behaviors that may cause harm to the client or others. Most clients stay eight to 12 months, but a minimum commitment of four months is required. Once ready to move into independent living, an aftercare plan is created with the goal of assisting the client maintain long-term sobriety.

Absolutely no consumption of alcohol or not-prescribed drugs is allowed. Random drug tests may be performed at the discretion of staff. A 10 pm curfew Sundays to Thursdays, at midnight on Fridays and Saturdays must be obeyed. Clients are eligible for overnight passes after 30 days, and must be approved by staff in advance. Clients must also attend all in-house 12-step meetings and complete a rotating list of chores.

Clients must also actively pursue employment or education. Caldwell House offers assistance and support by providing clients with resources and referrals. Fees must be paid on time, and includes room and board. Four weeks must be paid in advance on admission. A house manager is available on-site 24/7, and the director and assistant director oversee admissions and treatment plans.

Extras

A variety of games are available on-site, as well as pool table and air-hockey. Clients have access to a well-equipped gym on the grounds, as well as large wooded walking trails.

Caldwell House provides a supportive environment for men transitioning from residential treatment to independent living. Those in the early stages of recovery often benefit from living among other newly sober people, as well as remaining connected to 12-step meetings and the subsequent fellowship. This large home is comfortable and provides all essential tools for living, making it an excellent choice.
