Cahaba Center for Mental Health Review
Cahaba Center for Mental Health has been offering mental health support, developmental disability services and outpatient substance abuse treatment in the Selma, Alabama since 1973. The main facility is located in Selma but satellite offices can be found in neighboring Perry and Wilcox counties.
Treatment and Staff
The Selma location offers substance abuse treatment for adults, in addition to mental health services for adults and children. Substance abuse treatment options consist of three separate outpatient tracks. One for adults 18 and over, one for those with co-occurring disorders and another specifically designed to address the issues of substance abusing pregnant women and women with young children. Most of the treatment consists of group therapy, although individual sessions are available when needed. Detox is not provided.
The substance abuse programs meet five times a week, for three-hour sessions. Clients have the option of attending the morning session from 9:00 am to noon or the evening session from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. The woman’s program meets in the afternoons from noon to 3:00 pm only. Group sizes range from 10 to 20, allowing clients to both form bonds with their peers and have individualized attention. Group topics include relapse prevention, anger management, processing, coping skills, trauma and employment.
Cahaba Center for Mental Health offers a separate outpatient track for those with co-occurring disorders. It discovered that this population is frequently treated for either substance abuse or mental health issues, but not both in the same program. The goal of this track is for the client to receive integrated and individual treatment, based on the clinical assessment. Services in this track include the “Double Trouble” support group. Co-occurring disorder clients may also address dual diagnosis issues in individual therapy and attend regular adult outpatient groups.
The staff includes licensed therapists and substance abuse counselors.
Extras
All clients who participate in the substance abuse program are subject to random drug testing, helping to keep them on track and allowing therapists to track clients’ setbacks. The substance abuse program offers a family day once a month when family members are invited in for a full day of group sessions and education on substance abuse.
In addition to providing treatment for substance abuse, this facility offers outpatient mental health services for both adults and children.
In Summary
Through the application of intensive group therapy, Cahaba Center for Mental Health helps clients to regain their lives. While many outpatient programs can be quite infrequent, meeting only once a week, this facility offers up to five days of support for free.
