Cache Creek Lodge is a 12-step based, residential and transitional housing program for men that was founded in 1974 by Hugh Cameron, a local landowner who wanted to help community members struggling with substance abuse. The facility specializes in serving the ex-offender populationmany clients are required to attend under the conditions of their probation or parole. Through CBT, intensive therapy and supportive community, the program has helped countless men lead healthier lives.

Accommodations and Food

The 22-bed transitional care program is set up in an apartment complex. Each apartment houses two clients and includes a bathroom, kitchen, living room and dining room.

Clients in the 45-bed residential treatment program live in a home in Woodland, California, just outside Sacramento. Nicely sized bedrooms with bunk beds and dressers are shared between three to four clients at a time. The house also includes a living room with a TV, full kitchen, dining room and a backyard space. Smoking can be done outside during break time. When it comes time for therapy, clients walk over to the main Cache Creek Lodge building.

Residents can take weekly trips to the grocery to pick out food items; a weekly allowance is provided via a food card. Back in the home, they learn how to prepare meals for themselves. In the evenings, cooking often becomes a group activity, with clients taking turns with the preparation and cleaning duties. Coffee and snacks are available throughout the day.

Treatment and Staff

Cache Creek Lodge is a long-term facility, allowing clients to stay up to six months in treatment. On-site detox is not available and must be done prior to arrival. The program’s goal is community re-integration, using evidence-based practices such as CBT and DBT in a group setting. Clients meet for one-on-one therapy once a week with their primary social worker. Group therapy happens for several hours each day, with topics such as anger management, trauma, life skills, meditation and relapse prevention.

The 12 steps are also a major part of recovery at Cache Creek Lodge. Clients attend several AA/NA meetings per week, going deeper into step work during group therapy. Clients can also take advantage of such services as financial literacy and employment assistance. By the end of their stay, they know how to research housing and job opportunities.

The transitional housing program is a halfway house service. Clients attend work or school during the day, while participating in group therapy and 12-step meetings in the evenings.

The staff includes case managers and counselors.

Extras

For exercise, the men have access to a small weight room. Group recreational activities are arranged on a weekly basis, taking off-site trips such as hiking. An on-site garden allows the men to engage with nature, participating in the care of the plants.

In Summary

Cache Creek Lodge is a great option for men who need long-term support. Through a 12-step based approach to recovery, those who are willing to do the work can find a new way of life.
