Cabrito House Review
Cabrito House is a men’s only sober living located in the Los Angeles suburb of Canoga Park. This facility is a non-profit that never turns any man away provided he is dedicated to getting sober and his life back on track. Cabrito House was established in 1970 and since then has offered hundreds of men each year a safe place to live while learning about the 12 steps and getting back on their feet.
Accommodations and Amenities
The two story home can accommodate up to 15 clients in dormitory style bedrooms that fit up to five per room. Clients all have their own dressers and storage space within each room. There are three shared bathrooms throughout and a large living room with leather couches, a wood burning fireplace and 52” flat screen TV. There are spacious outdoor areas that include a backyard with pool and fountain, and a connected smaller building where meetings are held.
Meals are prepared on-site by full time kitchen staff and served in the shared dining area. The meals are hearty and filling in the vein of comfort food.
Rules and Regulations
The initial step to being able to reside at Cabrito House is the client admitting he has a problem and is powerless over drugs and alcohol. One of the major elements of this facility is not turning away someone who truly needs help regardless of their past. Clients are required to actively seek employment and attend AA meetings on a regular basis. Once steady employment is secured, residents are expected to pay their share of the living expenses, which are combined with the generous donations the facility receives.
Clients can stay at Cabrito House for six to nine months and are offered a variety of meetings both on-site and off, that are both gender-specific and co-ed. In addition to meeting attendance, clients have weekly Big Book study.
The staff is mainly comprised of former residents of Cabrito House who are now clean and sober and are able to give their time and energy helping incoming clients.
Extras
In addition to the pool, this facility has a work out room with weights to promote physical fitness. The men participate in a number of fundraising events in order to offset living costs. This includes the annual golf tournament, yard sales, and hosting bingo nights.
In Summary
The main component to success, in addition to following the 12 steps, is that Cabrito House emphasizes the importance of self-support and care, which in turn boost self-esteem and self worth and makes the journey of finding recovery even more meaningful. The result is a majority of the residents return to their communities as healthy and productive members of society.
