Burkwood Treatment Center Review
For over 20 years the Burkwood Treatment Center has been offering substance abuse treatment for adults 25 miles east of Minneapolis in Hudson, Wisconsin. Burkwood Treatment Center utilizes the 12-step approach, offering residential treatment, a family program and continuing care.
Accommodations and Food
Burkwood Treatment Center offers 35 beds in a mansion which has been converted into a treatment center. The facility is located in a rural residential neighborhood setting. All bedrooms are located in the main house, which also has two living rooms where groups take place, a kitchen and a dining room. All gender-specific rooms are shared, two to three clients per room. Each client has their own bed with a nightstand. There are no TVs in the bedrooms, only in the living rooms. Two other buildings on the same property house the counselors’ offices and the admissions department.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all provided, during one-hour breaks from treatment. Breakfast is usually at 7:30 am, lunch is served at 11:45 pm and dinner at 5 pm. Cell phones are not permitted. Smoking is only allowed in designated areas.
Treatment and Staff
Burkwood Treatment Center welcomes clients from all walks of life and those with co-occurring disorder diagnoses. While 12-step focused, it also utilizes CBT. The program runs from a 6:30 am wake-up to 10 pm lights out. There are two 15 minute breaks during the day (one in the am and one in the pm) in addition to meal breaks. One hour of personal time is allowed from 9 to 10 pm. Weekends have a more relaxed schedule with two-hour visitation slots from two to four pm.
Clients take part in individual therapy sessions at least once per week, while about five group sessions are offered throughout each day. These include process groups, skills groups, guided imagery groups and activity groups as well in Gestalt-influenced and analogy-based plays. Family therapy is also available. Clients also attend outside AA/NA meetings, transportation is provided.
Continuing care at Burkwood Treatment Center focuses on transitional treatment, finding clients a sober home and providing Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) counseling, which meets nine hours a week for group therapy. Clients have the option of using follow-up medication management services with a psychiatrist.
Burkwood Treatment Center employs four LCDCs, a psychiatrist and a registered nurse.
Extras
Clients may take part in recreation therapy such as yoga, horseshoes, volleyball and basketball as well as outings to visit Willow River State Park and a nearby university campus.

Burkwood accepts most insurance, offering a 6-week program at a cash pay of $350 per day for a total of $14,700 for its 42-day program. The remaining balance is to be paid increments every 10 days from then on.
