Burke Center Review
Established in 1974, Burke Center is a non-profit organization that offers mental health and services for individuals who have development disabilities. Residents of 12 Eastern Texas counties are served, including Angelina, Houston, Jasper, Nacogdoches, Newton, Polk, Sabine, San Augustine, San Jacinto, Shelby, Trinity and Tyler. Chemical dependency services are available through a partnership with the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council of Deep East Texas (ADAC). Outpatient facilities for substance abuse treatment are located in Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Jasper and Livingston, Texas. Treatment involves inpatient detox and a structured outpatient program. The program is not 12-step based but clients do follow a set curriculum that includes evidence based therapies.
Treatment and Staff
Burke Center’s inpatient detox is in Lufkin, where adult and adolescent clients also have access to outpatient treatment. Each client must undergo an evaluation to determine what kind of treatment is best suited for his or her needs.
The inpatient detox program has a total of four beds. Clients usually stay for three to 10 days, depending on the severity of their substance use. They are provided with round-the-clock medical care as well as counseling and a discharge plan. Clients can step down to the outpatient track following discharge.
The adult and adolescent outpatient program includes one to two hour-long individual sessions per month, as well as group therapy once or twice a week. Group topics include early recovery, relapse prevention, coping skills and substance abuse education. Evidence based therapies such as CBT and DBT are frequently used. The length of time spent in this program is anywhere from three to six months.
In addition to the services mentioned above, the adolescent program includes one 90-minute family education group session twice a month. For those in the cannabis program, four home visits are conducted by the primary therapist. The staff consists of LADCs, nurses, physicians and interns. Group sizes range from 10 to 20 people at a time.
Extras
Additional services offered through Burke Center include mental health treatment, job skills training for those with developmental disabilities, early childhood intervention and medical services. ADAC also provides services for offenders such as minors in possession, DWI intervention and a drug offenders education program.
In Summary
In partnership ADAC, Burke Center offers substance abuse treatment rooted in evidence based therapies. Using a mixture of traditional individual and group therapy, clients learn new ways of coping with stress. The outpatient program is basic—meaning those in need of more intensive treatment may need to look elsewhere. However, the Burke Center is a solid program for those seeking detox and flexible, affordable, low intensity care.
