Brookhaven Hospital Review

Located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Brookhaven Hospital provides residential and outpatient treatment in a structured setting. This facility offers services for substance abuse, mental health and eating disorder issues. From medically monitored detox to individualized treatment plans to aftercare, clients are guided through every step of recovery.

Accommodations and Food

The 64-bed residential facility is set up like a traditional treatment center, so expect an institutional vibe. Bedrooms are shared, featuring twin-sized beds, adequate closet space and a desk. The facility also includes a common area with a TV, a dining room, lecture hall, therapy rooms and therapist’s offices. There is no gym, but there is an outside area for clients to get some fresh air. Eight smoking breaks per day are allowed.

Three healthy meals a day are provided for residents. The menu includes homestyle favorites like meatloaf, lasagne, beef stew and macaroni and cheese. A salad bar is available at lunch and dinner. Special dietary requests can usually be accommodated. Coffee is available in the mornings and snacks are provided in the afternoons and evenings.

Treatment and Staff

Brookhaven Hospital clients are separated per program, but dual diagnosis support is offered as part of the substance abuse track. Treatment time usually lasts for 30 days, although it may depend on the individual’s needs. A medically monitored detox is available and is included in the cost of substance abuse treatment. Detox takes place in a segregated unit and clients typically join the others after three to five days.

The residential programs offer 24-hour support, with medical monitoring and a rigorous, daily schedule of therapy. The substance abuse program offers individual therapy at least once a week and group therapy for several hours each day. Evidence-based modalities such as CBT and DBT are used in both group and individual settings. Group topics include relapse prevention, trauma, self-esteem, life skills, introduction to the 12 steps, communication, grief, parenting, codependency and anger management. In addition to daily therapy, attendance at two off-site AA/NA meetings is required each week, allowing clients to become part of the local recovery community.

As discharge time nears, residents work with their primary counselor to map out an efficient aftercare plan. Outpatient services at Brookhaven include medication management, individual therapy and group therapy. Outpatient clients are also required to attend at least two AA/NA meetings per week. Typically, clients receive these services on a weekly basis for eight to 12 weeks following discharge, but they can continue as long as necessary.

The behavioral health staff of Brookhaven Hospital includes three Master’s-level therapists, one of whom is an LADC, three LCSWs and several Bachelor’s-level therapists.

Extras

Medication management and psychiatric services are provided for mental health issues.

Family group is offered in a therapeutic setting, allowing family members to participate in discussions about codependency and boundaries.

In Summary

Brookhaven Hospital offers comprehensive, short-term care for those suffering from chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. The hospital has a luxury price tag, but doesn’t really offer anything fancy, just quality medical treatment and medication management. Overall, this program provides structured support for those in the Tulsa area who need 24-hour care.
