Located in Des Moines, Iowa, Broadlawns Medical Center is a Polk County acute care community hospital with over 1,000 employees. The Broadlawns Medical Center Addiction Treatment Services unit offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) as well as a standard outpatient track. The facility emphasizes treatment for co-occurring disorders, so dual diagnosis treatment is a major component of Broadlawns’ program.

Treatment and Staff

Broadlawns’ Addiction Treatment Services program is based out of its main medical campus, a large acute care facility with special conference and individual rooms for outpatient services. Those participating in IOP attend group and individual therapy sessions led by LADCs from 9 am to noon, Monday through Friday. The director of the program is a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW).

Clients participating in the less intense basic outpatient program attend fewer sessions per week. The treatment at Broadlawns’ relies on a variety of modalities, though the program generally uses a blend of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Rational Emotive Therapy (RET). There is also an introduction to the 12-step philosophy with on-site meetings held twice a month. While each client’s path of recovery is different, the program generally lasts eight to 12 weeks. As of now, there is no aftercare program provided, nor is there a family program. There is also no medical detox provided as part of the IOP, though clients are referred out for these services during their intake evaluation.

As mentioned, there is also a comprehensive dual diagnosis program offered at Broadlawns’ called “New Connections” which is incorporated into the IOP. This includes both group and individual sessions that focus specifically on mental health issues. While there is no psychiatrist on the outpatient staff, Broadlawns does work with a psychiatric provider who can schedule special appointments for those in need. Medication management is offered in a similar manner, with clients needing to make specific appointments with the psych-provider to begin this course of care.

Extras

It is worth noting that Broadlawns Medical Center also offers a specific outpatient program which focuses solely on behavioral and mental health issues. This program has certain features that the dual-diagnosis program does not have such as a medical team and the incorporation of the family unit into treatment. Furthermore, this program extends to children and adolescents from ages five to 18, offering medication management, individual psychotherapy and family therapy.

In Summary

The substance abuse services offered at Broadlawns Medical Center Addiction Treatment operates as a branch of a broader mental health program, which is itself part of a large hospital complex. While there is a no-nonsense IOP provided with daily group and individual therapy sessions and an introduction to the 12-steps, Broadlawns’ emphasis tends to fall on the mental health side of their dual diagnosis services. For those in need of mental health recovery as their primarily issue with substance abuse as an aside, this program may well be a perfect fit.
