Brightwater Landing is a residential treatment facility in the Elements Behavioral Health network. Clients come to Brightwater for medically monitored detox services and innovative treatments for addiction and co-occurring disorders with a focus on healing the wounds of trauma. Though not all Behavioral Health facilities emphasize 12-step ideology, Brightwater Landing builds its treatment on a 12-step foundation.
Accommodations and Food
The Brightwater Landing facility is situated on a mountain bluff overlooking the Susquehanna River in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Clients reside in rustic, ranch-style cottages in a therapeutic setting on a sprawling private campus. Men and women sleep in separate residences, but there are 50 full sized beds in all, 10 in each house. The residences have wood floors and vaulted ceilings, with leather couches and televisions in the living rooms. Clients go to separate buildings for therapy, group meetings and dining.
As part of the Brightwater Landing experience, clients enjoy nutritious meals made by a gourmet chef and culinary team. Meals are prepared in the French bistro style using local organic ingredients and eaten in the separate dining facility.
Treatment and Staff
Brightwater Landing provides medical detox services to a maximum of six clients within a private and comfortable setting on campus, led by a board-certified psychiatrist. Residential clients in the 30-day program are treated using traditional therapy, holistic treatment, experiential therapy and adventure therapy. Trauma-informed care is a key component of the program. It is used to identify and treat both the symptoms and the underlying emotional, behavioral and social factors that contribute to substance abuse. Master’s-level clinicians ensure that any co-occurring mental health disorders are identified and treated along with addiction.
Clients at Brightwater are encouraged to begin working the steps in treatment. Other Brightwater treatment modalities include CBT and motivational interviewing. Experiential and adventure therapies incorporate nature as a metaphor for life’s challenges, and utilize the environment to help clients get in touch with their authentic selves.
Brightwater puts a special emphasis on counseling where therapists pose open-ended questions and use affirmations to encourage clients to get active in their own process. Clients meet for individual therapy twice a week.
Clients meet for group therapy five times a week, and mostly these groups are single-gender. Families are able to schedule therapy once a week with their family member’s counselor and attend a family weekend. When clients are not in therapy or group or at a meal, they may be getting physical exercise (at the gym, hiking, or doing yoga). Brightwater’s thinking is that down time isn’t healthy in early recovery as much as being active so weekends are fully scheduled as well and include workshops on individual and family healing, trauma resolution, relationship-building, spirituality and long-term recovery.
With a high staff-to-client ratio, Brightwater Landing’s team is able to develop comprehensive, individualized treatment plans to meet the unique needs of each client. The staff includes a PhD with extensive complex trauma experience, an expert in addictions and intimacy disorders, a board-certified psychiatrist, Master’s-level clinicians and further specialists in trauma, addiction recovery and alternative therapies.
Brightwater Landing offers walking meditations along the Mason-Dixon line, which runs through the property; hiking, canoe rides down the river, a 30-foot climb in the air on the ropes course. Therapeutic drumming, yoga, art and hypnotherapy are also available.
Those with traumatic histories and co-occurring disorders could do well within this gated and safe mountainside location.
