Bridges to Change Review

Bridges to Change is a not for profit that offers a number of services, including addiction treatment, mentoring and housing options, for people who have been affected by substance abuse, behavioral health issues, homelessness and poverty. Bridges to Change was founded in 2004 by Charles Simpson and Joann Griffin, two people who spent a majority of their careers working in the addiction field as well as with those who have been incarcerated and needed help to re-enter their communities. Bridges to Change provides programs throughout Portland, Oregon and its surrounding areas, and treatment includes incorporating the 12 steps, holistic approaches and evidence-based methods.

Treatment and Staff

There are different criteria for receiving services depending on the client’s needs. For instance, in order to be placed into one of housing facilities clients needs to be clean and sober for a minimum of 90 days, and some of the facilities require that the client have steady employment in order to pay the small monthly fees.

Depending on the county, there are different substance abuse treatment options and mentoring options. There are outpatient treatment facilities that also offer housing as part of the program, and stand alone programs. The clinics offer intensive outpatient programs (IOP) that ential treatment two or three days a week for around nine hours in total. This track includes around three group therapy session per week, AA and NA meetings on site, in addition to SMART Recovery meetings and Refuge Recovery, six or seven days a week, and weekly individual counseling. There are also a number of recreational activities available such as life skills training, relapse prevention, Seeking Safety and exercise.

The staff includes addiction specialists, LCSWs, case managers and resident techs.

Extras

Over 400 people across Oregon have been helped through Bridges to Change’s housing program that offers both transitional and permanent options. The residences vary between single family homes, duplexes and triplexes, and apartment buildings. These facilities are fully furnished and comfortable, and provide all the basic needs that a person would need, including food stamps, transportation, vocational training and placement and more.

Housing is always gender-specific and can accommodate up to 10 clients in the housing units designated for the addiction programs.

Treatment includes Recovery Yoga and memberships to a gym.
