BRIDGES, Inc. Review

Situated in the city of Pomona approximately 30 miles west of downtown Los Angeles, BRIDGES, Inc, which stands for Braswell Rehabilitation Institute for Development of Growth and Educational Services, is a non-profit organization that offers individualized residential treatment for adult clients struggling with addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders. Initially founded in 1976 to provide affordable childcare, food programs and vocational training, today BRIDGES offers several residential and outpatient programs.

Accommodations and Food

BRIDGES has a few residential locations in the Los Angeles area. Clients between the ages of 18 and 24 stay in the Canoga Park facility, an upscale suburban home far removed from the distractions of the city. Located in the western part of the San Fernando Valley, this house offers a quiet and serene environment perfect for clients to focus on their recovery. With only six individuals at a time, the facility offers an atmosphere that is communal without sacrificing privacy. Clients in this house are allowed to stay up to a year, depending on their needs and goals.

Clients ages 25 and older stay in one of two apartment buildings in El Monte, situated minutes away from the Bridges main office. These facilities can accommodate up to 30 individuals, who can stay up to a year and a half.

In all locations, three healthy meals per day are provided by BRIDGES.

Treatment and Staff

Upon intake, clients undergo an initial evaluation to guide the staff in creating the most effective treatment plan for their needs. Clients progress at their own pace with clear expectations in mind and specifically defined goals. Treatment length varies depending on the specific needs of the individual, though clients typically stay 12 to 18 months.

While the overall goal of BRIDGES is to break the cycle of dependency and institutionalization by restoring independence, the facility utilizes a comprehensive approach that integrates evidence-based and holistic methods. Residential programming prioritizes the care of mental illness and co-occurring disorders with a long-term focus on cultivating independent living skills. Clients engage in regular individual, group and family therapy sessions. Residential treatment provides around-the-clock care, medication management, mentoring as well as life skills education, vocation and education assistance.

BRIDGES employs a multidisciplinary team comprised of case managers, LCSWs, as well as therapists, community volunteers and interns from various educational institutions. For clients with co-occurring disorders, Bridges can provide dual diagnosis support.

Extra

BRIDGES, Inc. is supported by the Los Angeles County Department of  Mental Health, Medi-Cal as well as various grants and private donations. In addition, clients about to graduate from the residential programs receive help finding housing.

In Summary

BRIDGES, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that specializes in the care of clients struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. While the ultimate goal of treatment is to restore the client’s independence, BRIDGES offers residential programs that allow clients to stay for up to a year and a half. Evidence-based therapy sessions, medication management, life skills and vocational training are all significant components of the comprehensive programming. For clients seeking affordable residential programs in the LA area, BRIDGES is a great option.
