BridgePoint Center for Eating Disorders Review

Founded in 1997, BridgePoint Center for Eating Disorders offers flexible and individualized care plans for clients struggling with eating disorders. Based out of the town of Milden in Canada’s Saskatchewan province, the organization is a non-profit that works in partnership with Heartland Health Region, itself a subsidiary of Saskatchewan Health. While some outpatient counseling is available in the form of continuing care, the organization’s main program is its residential treatment. Treatment is open to adults, adolescents and families.

Accommodations and Food

Altogether, the BridgePoint Center for Eating Disorders offers 15 beds for both male and female residents in shared, gender-separate rooms. The facility is designed to have a homelike feel and each room includes twin beds, dressers and shared closet space. In addition to the bedrooms, the residence also features a grassy lawn, therapy rooms and a common area with cable TV. Throughout their stay, residents are served three meals a day with the help of on-staff nutritionists and chefs.

Treatment and Staff

BridgePoint does not provide on-site detox or stabilization services, all those who apply are expected to be medically and psychiatrically stable. Those in need of these services can also get referrals as necessary. Programming typically lasts 30 to 45 days.

Once admitted, clients begin Module 1, a 30-day stint of treatment that includes group and individual therapy, and implements both evidence-based and holistic care. While the specific practices used may vary by counselor, all plans are trauma-informed with holistic methods including breath and body work, creative expression, art therapy and yoga classes. Because the main focus of the program is on healthy eating, clients also learn about nutrition, cooking and meal planning as well. Groups cover a variety of topics such as self-esteem, healthy body image, trigger identification and relapse prevention. All residents also participate in a two-day family program during this initial module.

Once they complete the first phase, they can also choose to attend a second module which lasts for 17 days and focuses on self-development. Though basic support for issues like depression and anxiety may be available, those with more severe co-occurring disorders may want to seek additional help elsewhere. Similarly, 12-step participation is not required though it may be encouraged in some cases.

The staff at BridgePoint Center for Eating Disorders Consists of LMFTs, psychologists, RNs, LCSWs, art therapists, case managers and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

As mentioned, those who complete one of the above programs can also continue to the organization’s continuing care track, an outpatient-based plan that does periodic check-ups and group therapy sessions. Other special follow-up retreats are also available on a rotating basis. Programs also include LGBTQ-sensitive care.

In Summary

Overall, the BridgePoint Center for Eating Disorders is an affordable and flexible residential treatment facility for men and women struggling with eating disorders. Treatment plans include both evidence-based and holistic care approaches with nutritional education and clinical oversight. Though it may be more expensive for those coming from out-of-state, BridgePoint Center for Eating Disorders remains a strong resource for those in the area.
