brighton coloradoBridge Street Counseling Review

Located in downtown Brighton, Colorado, Bridge Street Counseling is a modest substance abuse services facility which provides an enhanced outpatient program, DUI classes and mental health evaluations. A relatively new facility, Bridge Street Counseling was founded in 2010 and has one primary staff member; a Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC) who also holds a Master’s degree in counseling with a focus on marriage, family and child therapy.

Treatment and Staff

Given that BSC is such a small operation, there is a high degree of individualization to their outpatient program. The recovery program is deemed an “enhanced” program, rather than an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) due to the fact that clients can receive no more than six to nine hours of treatment a week. The majority of clients who use these services are court or employer mandated, though some are self referred.

The only group services at BSC are the DUI education classes, which meet once a week for two hour sessions. Groups are always small, with generally four to 10 clients at a time. These classes are licensed by the Colorado Office of Behavioral Health and meet DUI infraction requirements. While clients often incorporate this class into their outpatient program, it is technically not a part of outpatient which is comprised of individual therapy sessions with Bridge Street’s primary counselor. There is another counselor on staff, though their involvement is minimal in the week-to-week sessions of the facility. For the most part, clients have a large hand in directing their treatment. A common weekly schedule might include a DUI class, a one-on-one anger management counseling session and then a one-on-one relapse prevention session later in the week.

There is no 12-step component to the counseling sessions at BCS and since most of the clients are there as a result of needing to fulfill a court mandate, each client’s treatment typically ends once those hours have been completed. While there are no dual diagnosis services, there are mental health evaluations offered during initial assessment. Those in need of medical help for co-occurring disorders or detox services are referred out to suitable facilities.

Extras

An additional part of the individualized services at BSC is a family program, which includes marriage and couples counseling as well as pre-marital services and child therapy. Clients can also receive special sessions dedicated to grief and loss therapy, trauma–informed care and play therapy

In Summary

Given the size of Bridge Street Counseling’s operation, it is no surprise that their services are streamlined. Clients can expect basic outpatient services, DUI classes and evaluations that meet court and employer mandated requirements. While intensive programs are not available, it does afford clients a high degree of access and freedom to shape their recovery in a way that meets their specific needs.
