Bridge Inc Gadsen CampusThe Bridge Inc. Gadsden Campus Review

The Bridge was founded in 1974 in Gadsden County, Alabama. It provides substance abuse and addiction prevention and rehabilitation for adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 throughout Alabama. A variety of programs are offered, including all male inpatient, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that serves male and female clients, outpatient treatment and a variety of community-based initiatives. A leader in adolescent substance abuse treatment, The Bridge has worked with the Alabama Department of Youth Services since the mid 1990’s. The Gadsden Campus is a 72-acre property located in Etowah County, Alabama, that contains the Kennington, Mitchell and Northwood facilities, which cater exclusively to young men and share resources and staff.

Accommodation and Food

The Bridge, Inc. Gadsden Campus consists of a series of low tan buildings set against a lush green lawn. New clients are housed in side A of the building to assist them through the adjustment phase of their treatment. This side has four dorms accommodating three clients each. Side B contains five dorms that house four to five clients each. Private rooms are not available. The 72-acre property allows for the clients of each program to remain separate, while still fostering a sense of community. Outdoor activities and field trips are organized to utilize the peaceful environment.

Clients are provided all meals, which are nutritionally balanced and prepared by staff. The boys are expected to maintain a level of personal cleanliness and tidiness in their allocated areas, as well as assist with daily chores. A strict dress code is enforced, and there is a limited list of items the clients may bring onto the grounds.

Treatment and Staff

All three programs on the Gadsden Campus share treatment modalities and methods. They combine the transtheoretical model of change, Motivational Interviewing (MI), interactive journaling and CBT. The Hazelden Adolescent Co-occurring Disorder Series is used to treat clients that require dual diagnosis support. A range of both on and off-site 12-step meetings are offered, and there is a deep spiritual component to the treatment at Bridge.

Clients participate in the highly structured program, which lasts 90 days and includes daily group therapy sessions four hours in length, accredited school and/or GED classes, basic living skills training, exercise, chores and structured group activities. Individual therapy is offered twice weekly. Clients must be at a low risk for withdrawal, as medically monitored detox is not available. Additional medical and nursing services can be provided as needed.

Staff includes CSACs, LCSW therapists and program managers. As the staff is shared across three facilities, the number of staff present at any given time varies. Clients are supervised 24/7.

Extras

Family services are offered twice a month and all family members are encouraged to attend. This consists of counseling as a family and treatment and discharge plan development.

In Summary

Clients of Bridge Inc. at the Gadsden Campus benefit from shared staff and resources through Kennington, Mitchell and Northwood facilities. The evidence-based treatment programs, along with individualized treatment plans, allow for clients to gain recovery in a highly structured and stable environment. While many clients admitted have minimal support in their home environments, the Gadsden Campus provides family programs to foster such relationships. When, family support is not possible, Gadsden Campus still provides a strong base from which to build recovery.

Cost is determined by the family income and established on a sliding scale. Families that earn under $60,000 are required to pay only 5% of that amount, bringing the total cost of care to around $530. This amount can also be cleared through an interest-free payment plan. Bridge Inc. does not believe anybody should be refused treatment based on inability to pay. Anyone seeking inpatient or outpatient treatment programs in Alabama, would do well to consider Bridge Inc.
