Bremen Youth ServicesThe Basics

In the middle-class Chicago suburb of Oak Forest, Illinois, Bremen Youth Services offers outpatient substance abuse treatment to adolescents and young adults ages 11 to 21. Founded in 1964, this is a unique community resource that welcomes clients who are at-risk or experimenting with or using drugs or alcohol. It also offers specialized counseling services for those who have been affected by the substance abuse of a parent or other family member.

Treatment

Bremen Youth Services provides outpatient treatment services including intervention, assessment, referral, outpatient groups and aftercare.  The five-week outpatient program includes group, family and individual sessions each week, while the family program offers counseling to clients’ parents. Treatment methods include Motivational Interviewing (MI), CBT and DBT.

If the initial assessment reveals a co-occurring disorder, dual diagnosis support from trained mental health professionals is available. Though there aren’t on-site 12-step meetings, Bremen Youth Services refers clients to AA/NA meetings or other community-based support groups. It also collaborates with local school districts to find alternative punishments, rather than suspension, for drug- and alcohol-related infractions.

Extras

Bremen Youth Services offers a variety of programs that may enhance recovery for young people. These include expressive-therapy groups, children-of-divorced-parents groups and teen pregnancy prevention. Bremen Youth Services also offers music and art therapies. During the summer, they hold a therapeutic day camp for those ages five to 12, a seven-week program that runs four days a week. Many of the older clients serve as mentors/camp counselors—alumni help out too.

In Summary

Bremen Youth Services offers young people and their loved ones comprehensive, affordable substance abuse services. For an adolescent or young adult who is struggling with addiction, this place could help pave the way for a bright, addiction-free future.

  1. I had an experience with this agency and was not pleased with the outcome. My son had gotten into trouble and the school suggested drug education. This was to be a 5 session group program. This agency was to then write a letter to the school commenting on my son’s completion of this education. First, this appears to be a newly refurbished facility. The “counselors” appear to be young and inexperienced and no credentials are displayed or offered for review. I was asked to complete paperwork on my first visit and was not offered a pen or anything to write on. The major problem I had was with my son’s final session. Prior to this session, the group had played “Drug Jeopardy”. I question this as education. I was late for the final session and called 10 min (prox) after my appointment time to let them know where I was and how long it would take me to get there. I was encouraged to come. I traveled 30 min 1 way speeding to get there and arrived 20 min late, 10 minutes after I called. When I arrived I was told my son could not attend that session. Additionally, he would have to reschedule for the next scheduled 5 session program or a private session. all of which was an additional charge. If I didn’t they wouldn’t write the letter to the school. I called my son’s school from the parking lot to time stamp the time and spoke to the school the next morning. Obviously, I did not have to reschedule with this “facility” and my obligation was filled with the school. I could include how uninvited one feels waiting in the waiting area and the TV remote is offered to someone else in the area and they are assisted in finding a Spanish channel. Fortunately, I speak Spanish but what if I didn’t or just didn’t want to watch a Spanish talk show. I would not recommend this facility based on staff, qualification and customer service. the only redeeming value here is relatively new inexpensive furniture and furnishings.
