The Basics
In the middle-class Chicago suburb of Oak Forest, Illinois, Bremen Youth Services offers outpatient substance abuse treatment to adolescents and young adults ages 11 to 21. Founded in 1964, this is a unique community resource that welcomes clients who are at-risk or experimenting with or using drugs or alcohol. It also offers specialized counseling services for those who have been affected by the substance abuse of a parent or other family member.
Treatment
Bremen Youth Services provides outpatient treatment services including intervention, assessment, referral, outpatient groups and aftercare. The five-week outpatient program includes group, family and individual sessions each week, while the family program offers counseling to clients’ parents. Treatment methods include Motivational Interviewing (MI), CBT and DBT.
If the initial assessment reveals a co-occurring disorder, dual diagnosis support from trained mental health professionals is available. Though there aren’t on-site 12-step meetings, Bremen Youth Services refers clients to AA/NA meetings or other community-based support groups. It also collaborates with local school districts to find alternative punishments, rather than suspension, for drug- and alcohol-related infractions.
Extras
Bremen Youth Services offers a variety of programs that may enhance recovery for young people. These include expressive-therapy groups, children-of-divorced-parents groups and teen pregnancy prevention. Bremen Youth Services also offers music and art therapies. During the summer, they hold a therapeutic day camp for those ages five to 12, a seven-week program that runs four days a week. Many of the older clients serve as mentors/camp counselors—alumni help out too.
